MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Sources say the suspect in the Jacob Wetterling case led the FBI to remains that are now being tested for DNA.
Agents pressed Danny Heinrich for information on the nearly 27-year-old mystery in the last few days. Sources say the FBI took Heinrich out of jail at least twice this week.
(snip...)
Twelve-year-old Jacob Wetterling was kidnapped by a masked gunman on Sunday, Oct. 22, 1989 in St. Joseph while biking home from a convenience store with his brother and a friend.
(snip...)
The FBI named Heinrich a person of interest in the Wetterling case last October. Heinrich was charged with 25 counts of child pornography possession on the same day, to which he eventually pleaded not guilty.
Note: This case led to a number of important things, including the sex offender registry. It's been unsolved until now. DNA testing is underway, but since the person suspected in the crime led police to the location, it's very likely Jacob.

(7,415 posts)since I first saw a program about it on the TV. So shocking in that idyllic area that such a monster could exist.

(115,734 posts)I remember when Jacob first disappeared - it was a huge news story. Patty Wetterling never gave up and got involved in the center for missing and exploited children (I think she's the national chair now). She even ran for Congress and was defeated by the odious Michele Bachmann - which tells you how nuts they are in the 6th CD.
It's been almost 30 years.

(11,843 posts)Jacob was taken almost 27 years ago, but one would have to be a hermit to not know the story.

(109 posts)I was 2 years younger than Jacob when he was taken. Born and growing up in No Dak at the time. Every one was freaked out. My mom was so scared to let me do the things I would normally do, which is the best part of living in No Dak, doing almost anything you want as a kid. We moved to MN the following year. Right now my facebook is blowing up from family and friends in No Dak and MN. For 2 states filled with pretty awesome nice people, they want blood, some of the things being said, I've never seen it. His family is in my thoughts. What a strange crushing blow this must be for them. May true justice prevail though.

(417 posts)I can't fathom his family not knowing for all this time. My entire life. Many Minnesotans never forgot about him.
RIP Jacob.

The following is a statement from Governor Mark Dayton:
[div class = "excerpt"]
For nearly 27 years, Minnesotans have held the Wetterling family in their thoughts and prayers, as they never gave up hope and never stopped searching for their beloved Jacob. Today, we continue to offer our love and support, as the Wetterling family finally brings their son home to rest.
I hope they will find solace in knowing that they do not stand alone. Jacobs story has touched the lives and hearts of Minnesotans for a generation.
Today, I pray for a measure of peace for the Wetterling family and for all Minnesotans touched by this terrible tragedy. And I thank the law enforcement officials and others who never stopped searching for him.
The following is a statement from Lt. Governor Tina Smith:
[div class = "excerpt"]
There is nothing parents fear more than losing their child. For one Minnesota family nearly 27 years ago, that fear became tragically real.
None of us will ever know what the Wetterlings have gone through, on that day, or on each day since.
But every Minnesota family has felt their loss. My own sons were small when Jacob was lost, and for more than two decades, our family and all Minnesota families have hurt, prayed, and hoped alongside the Wetterlings.
That pain wont end today. But as the Wetterling family finally brings Jacob home, I hope they will find love and support in the thousands of families, including mine, in Minnesota, who have hurt, hoped, and prayed alongside them.
The Wetterling family never stopped searching. We stand in solidarity with the Wetterlings as they seek justice, and peace.
We will always keep Jacob in our hearts.
