Mark Shields just raised this issue on the PBS Newshour tonight. Shields said that today was "the worst day of Mitt Romney's life" because of President Obama's Rose Garden announcement conderning work permits for undocumented young people instead of immediate deportation.
In comparison, Romney has promised to "veto the Dream Act", putting himself far to the right of John McCain and even Rick Perry! This year, where will Republicans find the SCAPEGOATS they ordinarily use to generate enthusiasm among their working-class dupes? 800,000 young undocumented graduates and military conscripts don't seem to make a very good Republican target.
I'm looking forward to Face the Nation on Sunday for some real fireworks and Romney backpedaling on immigration reform, five months before a Presidential election. President Obama appears to have SPLIT THE REPUBLICN PARTY with one masterstroke that makes the major immigration issue deal with the most appealing segment of the undocumented, those who've lived here since soon after they were born and may not even speak Spanish.
WHAT'S YOUR OPINION?

(2,307 posts)I would guess nothing serious, nothing hard. I just hope it is not a Romney-fest like FOX gives him all the time. I may be pessimistic but I would bet there is a off limits list, or even a pre approved subject list. Sorry I haven't trusted CBS since they fired Dan Rather for telling the truth about Bush.

(5,818 posts)has made that impossible with his Friday afternoon Rose Garden announcelment. When Democrats push the political envelope with ACTION, even broadcast media must report on all the details and political implications.

(22,308 posts)There was a time when airtime was so precious that people were willing to go on shows even when there was a chance they might regret it.
Now airtime is so common that they can pick and choose what shows to go on.
Schieffer isn't bad at his job but I don't expect anything more than pointing out a few of the many many things Rmoney has contradicted himself on.

(37,648 posts)is going to do, is already going to vote for him. Anyone who likes that Romney says he'll veto it, is already going to vote for HIM. So it's a draw, politically.

(5,818 posts)and other candidates who did not take as hard a line on the unducumented as did Romney. And the Republican hard-line xenophobes will not like it at all if Romney softens his stance against the undocumented, as he seemed to to Friday afternoon.
Doesn't that constitute an importat SPLIT of the Republican Party, engineered by the White House this afternoon?

(31,706 posts)The other night I saw some teevee pundit clutching pearls about how Hispanics may not vote at all this year and there may be some truth to that. Little had been done to address the immigration situation over the past 3 years and this bold step is sure to not only please Hispanics (especially in the Southwest) but give them something to show up at the polls for. It was a very big step in solidifying votes and could make a big difference in states like Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado...and might even have an affect in Texas and Arizona as well.

(5,818 posts)this afternoon. CBS Evening News had a long segment on the likely 800,000 beneficiaries of the President's ne policy. It featured a youn woman who had juct TOSAY graduated from UCLA and did not have a drivers license and had dim hopes for a career because she was uncocumented. She was ECSTATIC about the Presient's announcement.
I cannot imagine that some of that CBS footage would not make it into FTN this Sunday.

(31,706 posts)I heard one Hispanic analyst say how this means nearly a million new taxpayers and the reaction is similar to that in the aftermath (or glow) of the President's announcement supporting gay marriage. Mittens is stuck in a box here...as always and I expect if Sheiffer asks him about this, he'll weasel and then spew about "self deportation" or some other right wing claptrap. In short, he's got no real response.
There's also a faction within the rushpublicans that not only rely on using undocumented workers but profit big time from it. They're against it cause you have to pay real wages and benefits...keep 'em illegal and keep 'em cheap.
Cheers...

(37,648 posts)and with the Republicans having gone so far right and anti-hispanic, I think they're going to show up and vote in record numbers to make sure a Republican doesn't get into office.

(31,706 posts)Hispanic voters and areas have had notoriously low turn-out that was sure to be even more depressed with all the rushpublican voter intimidation and caging games going on. There had been a lot of criticism in the Hispanic media about this President's lack of an immigration policy and taking their votes for granted. Just as I think the President coming out (no pun intended...well maybe) about supporting gay marriage and now taking a tough stand on an issue very important to a large group of Hispanics gives them a real vested interested in showing up on election day.
Our biggest enemy this November is apathy...

(25,453 posts)Granted that was in the primary stage and Murdoch was probably hoping for a non-Romney win. I can't imagine Schieffer is going to ask him anything that even approaches that level of difficulty.
