https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete's_PondPete's Pond is a pond in Botswana named for Pete Le Roux, general manager of Mashatu Game Reserve. Le Roux created it as a watering hole in the hopes of protecting wildlife from poachers on the Limpopo River.
The pond was the site of a National Geographic "WildCam" project in 2005, which involved a high-resolution video camera recording everything that happened at the pond, with live video streaming 24 hours a day. During the daytime, various animals, including elephants, warthogs, baboons, crocodiles, birds and monkeys can be seen in and around the pond. At night, the pond is sometimes visited by various big cats, canines, hyenas, a variety of smaller carnivores, rodents and aardvarks.
In April, 2011, after approximately a year of downtime, live video streaming of Pete's Pond returned via WildEarth TV.

I think I may have found the link originally here at DU. I watched it incessantly until it shut down. My favorite encounter was between two ostriches that were drinking at the pond. (BTW, I didn't realize how gigantic they were.) Suddenly they started and ran away. I thought for sure something like an elephant or lion was approaching.
Two warthogs, one smallish, the other smaller, approached and began drinking. After standing off to the side for awhile, one of the ostriches began tip toeing toward the pond. The larger warthog stopped drinking and turned to face it. The ostrich backed off and they both left. It was hilarious.
I watched for two hours last night after I found the link again. I'll be posting screenshots from time to time. I hope others will post also.

I think this is a crane. It was there all night and still there when I watched with coffee this morning.

I wanted more shots of this animal but it ran off quickly. Is it a water buffalo?

(7,004 posts)I was watching at the time that the sun was coming up and didn't see the monkeys, eagles, warthogs or ostriches. Maybe I was rebooting.
I guess that was a water buffalo I screenshoted. Boy that crane has it all figured out. It is camped out there always.
I'm dying to see some warthogs and ostriches again.

(7,939 posts)I can keep an eye on PP or Pixcontroller until something happens.
I just caught the ostrich as it was leaving the watering hole though.
The Eagle was on top of the dead tree.
There was some kind of dog getting a drink, it had stripes on its shoulders.

(3,370 posts)That crane - I am guessing it is a Sandhill crane - is fishing in the pond. Lots of frogs jumping out of the way. Very noisy night at the pond.
Thanks for posting this.

(7,004 posts)I took 85 screenshots of which I'll post several later.
The warthogs were luxuriating in the mud, the monkeys and giraffe were eating something from a thicket. There was a beautiful water buffalo, some lovely birds and just before I logged off one of the monkeys was preening another.
Other than a few crocodiles lurking, which made me nervous, all of them were peacefully co-existing.

(7,004 posts)Do you happen to know what the animal drinking beside it is? I also did a search for water buffalo which I guessed the larger animal to be. It's not.
I thought it was so cute that the little one wasn't intimidated by the much larger animal.
I just found this great page, animals of Botswana.
http://www.svdbotswana.org/Images/animals.html
I also found out that large animal is a wildebeast.

(26,263 posts)I'm currently sorting through my sister, mom and aunt's belongings for keep/toss/donate and it's a very emotional task. I keep the web site up on my lap top, right next to where I'm working. It is a great distraction - far more entertaining than television.

(26,263 posts)But there are some things that make it a joy, to do. I just found a pair of pink satin pajamas and a beautiful night gown that I suspect were part of my aunt's trousseau. She was married in 1945 and it looks like they've been boxed up for nearly that long.

I took a break today. I was up last night 4AM-6AM and got some good stuff but I'm too tired to crop and get links.
