Ohio ex-mayor who ‘dedicated life to Christ’ admits to raping 4-year-old and blames her as ‘willing"

A former Ohio mayor has admitted to repeatedly raping a child, prosecutors said — but the self-described Christian blames the girl for her own sexual abuse.

Richard Keenan, who served as mayor of Hubbard in 2010 and 2011, was indicted last month eight counts of rape and 12 counts of attempted rape and gross sexual imposition, reported the Youngstown Vindicator.

The 65-year-old Keenan pleaded not guilty last month during a court appearance, but prosecutors said he admitted to sexually assaulting the girl over a three-year period, beginning when she was 4 years old.

Prosecutors said Keenan confessed to the sex abuse to his wife, a pastor, a social worker and his brother- and sister-in-law. According to court filings, the child told Keenan’s wife about the abuse and she confronted him — and he then admitted “I did it.”

Keenan also admitted the abuse during group discussions at a nearby hospital, and he then voluntarily checked himself into a psychiatric facility because he was suicidal. He told a social worker there that he had molested the girl for at least two years, beginning in September 2013, but he blamed the child for initiating the sex acts and described her as a “willing participant.”

Now please understand I'm not suggesting a majority or even a particularly large number of Christian leaders are fans of child rape, or are willing to countenance it. I'm actually pretty sure the huge majority of them find it as abhorrent as anyone else.

But what they don't do, despite the most egregious provocations, is condemn other Christians as vile immoral monsters. Other people yes, but only with the handy-dandy NTS handwashing that they are not real Christians. I absolutely guarantee any personal condemnation of this guy from them will include that self-protective distancing component that says he's not a Christian like they are.

You will never hear Christian leaders say something like "Prominent Christian X is a vicious evil bastard" unprompted without impugning his Christianity. It's because they are so wrapped up in the utter fiction that Christianity drives and guides morality and provides an ethical foundation. So anybody who does something heinous will never be condemned as a Christian by Christians, because their self-worth is built on the facade of Christian morality that says one cannot be a genuine committed Christian and a sadistic monster at the same time, history replete in such be damned.

Recently met (and was unsuccessful at doing anything to help) a very troubled woman raped by her Seventh Day Adventist family for years. That was a new one for me, hearing of this sort of thing in that faith.

But any religious group that tries to set itself apart as "better than the rest" and becomes cultish is prone to this crap. And the adherents deeply want to be loved by the abusers and seen as "good" in the church, so they turn their heads even when they suspect the worst.
