Dick Romney

Dick Romney

by Jed Lewison

Mitt Romney left a note on the press bus today for reporters traveling with him on his five-day bus tour:

This pretty much sums up my reaction:

Ha ha ..erasing hard drives is hilarious! That Mitt!!! Next time, he'll cut your hair! RT @jedlewison Dick Romney https://t.co/USFI7roZ

What a dick.

From the comments:

Obama campaign jumped all over this:

But whether Romney realized it or not, the quip at the end of the note — “erased your hard drives” — provided an awkward reminder of a 2011 Boston Globe investigation revealing that before Romney left office as governor of Massachusetts in late 2006, “11 of his top aides purchased their state-issued computer hard drives, and the Romney administration’s e-mails were all wiped from a server.”

“Romney administration officials had the remaining computers in the governor’s office replaced just before Governor Deval Patrick’s staff showed up to take power in January 2007,” the Globe’s Michael Levenson and Matt Viser reported in a Nov. 2011 article.

(snip)

But a spokesman for the Obama campaign said on Saurday that Romney’s attempt at campaign trail humor was no laughing matter.

“Mitt Romney may joke about how his staff erased government hard drives to keep his records secret, but what we do know about his record as Governor is anything but funny — he left the state 47th in job creation and number one in per capita debt in the nation,” Obama spokesman Danny Kanner said in a statement.

I expect the reporters quickly checked their PCs to see if they were erased.

(And, given the ease of recording things using PCs these days, making a permanent record of off-the-record behavior and conversations, I'm not so sure it is just a joke.)

2. Yet another misstep by Romney

The man is obsessed with secrecy: he removed his computers when he left the Governor's office, he won't reveal the identity of his bundlers, he won't release his tax returns, he won't release detailed info about his work at Bain and how many jobs he destroyed, he won't release info about his foreign bank holdings, and he holds closed-door rallies where he kicks out the press. I doubt the media will seize on this story but it's another incredible, unthinking gaffe on his part to remind us of his secret, stealthy ways.

He seems to be very mean-spirited, and still a bully at heart.

And does he REALLY want to remind us of how he's wiped out all traces of his Gov., Olympics, Bain, Taxes???

He's NOT a charismatic or engaging candidate, so there is no chance of him sliding by without revealing who he is. There is a reason why EVERYTHING is sealed. He is Tricky Mitt...
