New Trump Debate Strategy Will Stress Practice

Campaign advisers to Donald Trump, concerned that his focus and objectives had dissolved during the first presidential debate on Monday, plan to more rigorously prepare him for his next face-off with Hillary Clinton by drilling the Republican nominee on crucial answers, facts and counterattacks, and by coaching him on ways to whack Mrs. Clinton on issues even if he is not asked about them,” the New York Times reports.

“Whether he is open to practicing meticulously is a major concern, however, according to some of these advisers and others close to Mr. Trump.”

“A delicate approach to the candidate is now in the works. Before his advisers can shape Mr. Trump’s performance for the next debate, on Oct. 9 in St. Louis — which, contrary to speculation, he does plan to attend, a top aide said — they need to convince him that he can do better than he did in the first one and that only a disciplined, strategic attack can damage Mrs. Clinton with voters.”

Not a great plan if they can't get the candidate on board.

They'll be on the stage together, taking questions directly from the audience. So it may not behoove him to "whack" her while answering a question directly from some grandmother or kindergarten teacher.

It sounds like he's preparing for the debate that's already come and gone, not the one on Oct 9, which really calls for him to quickly develop skills interacting with members of the public, which he sorely lacks, as he's done few, if any, town hall forums.

We know that Hillary is in charge of her campaign and leading it like she will lead the country as POTUS. She has meetings with intelligent people, both asks for and takes advice, then makes her decisions.

He cannot focus so they will have to prime him on a very limited number of attack lines which he likely will deliver at the wrong time - this will very likely backfire particularly in the town hall format - in the past this format has not been kind to candidates who get too aggressive. Also he opens himself up to one of Hillary's polished responses which could set him back on his heels. Nothing he can possibly say will surprise her and she will be prepared. I think he would be far better off just trying to answer the questions in a thoughtful way - his job now is to try to look presidential and he has proved he cannot do that and be on the attack at the same time.

That's a good thing for Hillary.

I'm looking forward to an even more spectacularly bizarre performance from Trump at the next debate. I actually WANT him to bring up Bill's infidelities, then watch Hillary remain cool and refuse to engage.

To totally ignore any questions put to him by the American People, say f..k you to the American voter, and just rant. Yep, sounds like a plan.

I wonder if cooper can actually do his job as moderator or will he be too weak to handle it? (I'm betting he will be weak.)

The advisers shouldn't have to pussy foot around to coach him and to get in practice. Is this kindergarten?

After they've dealt with his crap, I'm wondering if in true t'Rump style, all of them will be missing their last pay check.

This man is not suitable for office.
