Stanford will pay you to attend its business school — but only if you agree to work in the Midwest

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/stanford-pay-attend-business-school-192900813.html

A new fellowship at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, one of the top ranked business schools, covers tuition and fees for MBA students. But the program comes with a catch: Students must be willing to take a job in the Midwest.

Students often select the California-based Stanford because they know they'll get a great education and make contacts in Silicon Valley, where many of them presumably want to work after graduation. But the school has plans to funnel students to more "underserved regions," where the economy could benefit from an infusion of talent.

"When we look at our country, and we think about different places where there's still a lot of room for growth and development, the Midwest was a big part of that," Simone Hill, an assistant director for MBA admissions at Stanford, told Bloomberg....

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial need and have strong ties to the Midwest, which may include current or prior residency or graduation from a high school in the region.

Hmmm. I don't suppose my two years in Chicago in the mid-'80s counts as "strong ties to the Midwest".

It was probably worth a try to make the great plains livable but all our money and hard work has obviously failed. Stanford is just throwing good money after bad and should cut its losses. We should just let it return to its natural state, bring the buffalo back, and run it as a tourist attraction for those nostalgic for life before civilization.

I admire your pluck. But remember - it's no disgrace bein from Texas. Only a disgrace having go back

Hook em horns!

Probably the nastiest political fight I ever saw was a feud over the precise shade of Texas Orange which was going on when I was simmering at UT in 1966.

in Mechanical Engineering magna cum laude. She would be more than happy to stay in the Midwest.

I wonder if I could convince her to go for it.

I'll concede Ames is a little dull, but Des Moines is cool, and it's 3 hours from KC; 2 hours from Omaha; 4 hours from M/SP; and 6 hours from Chicago by car if one gets bored.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri and a graduate of a Midwest highschool and University. I have family there. Hell, my family built some of the first (if not the first) buildings in what would become Kansas City.

But there is no fucking way I'd move back there.

I much prefer living on the San Andreas fault (which I can see out my window) to living through ice storms, sub-freezing temps for months and unbearable heat and humidity.

Seriously? That's hilarious. All the things in KC and you pick the ticky-tacky tourist trap? Of course, I'm a native so I remember what it used to be before Crooked Cleaver thought it'd be a great idea to put boats and fountains in a sewage run-off.

The weather blows. So, so much.

Were you born yet even? I had fun, but there aren't many places I'd consider living, and certainly less than a handful of places in the US.
