Democratic challenger Deborah Ross holds a one point lead over Republican incumbent Sen. Richard Burr, according to an Elon University poll. Website Talking Points Memo Polltracker Average rates the race a toss-up, with Ross leading Burr 45.5 to 43.9.

The tight race is an unexpected development, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times. Burr, who takes a "casual approach to campaigning" and has talked about retirement, has started to go negative on his challenger.

She is a Democrat facing Republican tea party guy Joe Heck. The race is getting tighter after a series of race and ethnic stumbles by the Heck campaign
