News not commenting on Jesse Watters' controversial Chinatown segment

Fox News isn't commenting on a controversial segment by its on-the-street interviewer Jesse Watters that has been widely criticized for containing several offensive Asian stereotypes.

The five-minute segment, which aired on "The O'Reilly Factor" Monday night, features Watters asking people in New York City's Chinatown about the 2016 campaign and U.S.-China relations. But Watters also asks his subjects if he should bow when saying hello, accuses a street vendor of selling stolen watches, and asks one stranger if he knows karate -- which originated in Okinawa, now part of Japan.

"This is one of the most blatantly racist things I have ever seen," Farhad Manjoo, the New York Times tech reporter, tweeted. "How can anyone at Fox News defend this? It's nuts."

"What Watters was really doing was making fun of the people he encountered with the broadest, dumbest Asian stereotypes imaginable — making it clear they were there as props for him and his viewers for what he clearly considered a hilarious joke, rather than to actually give their opinions," Vox's Libby Nelson observed after the segment aired on Tuesday.

Even Bill O'Reilly, the show's host, acknowledged during a discussion with Watters after the segment aired that Fox was "going to get letters."

In recent months, Watters has also done segments that made fun of Italian-Americans and the Amish.

That employing racist stereotypes against Asians is okay because someone makes fun of some white people on the beach?

They're wrong.

Yours is a most creative way to rationalize racism without publicly endorsing it. It often works well for particular narratives so many adhere to, regardless of whether it "always makes them look dumb" or not.

People make fun of Asians in ways they wouldn't dare dream of doing in public to anyone of any other race, and that just burns me up.

A white guy I knew once said this was because Asians were "so polite and submissive" that other people take advantage of us. And I, an Asian dude, told him to eat shit and get the hell out.

when I lived in Tennessee. We went to Sevierville, TN to a company making prototypes for us. Needless to say these suppliers of ours came up with several Asian stereotypes (including asking him about Karate - the same thing this dim bulb did on the street).

You don't have to go very far from an urban center in Tennessee to hear racism (actually in all white company you hear it even from Church going Christian brothers who wear their faith on their sleeves).

12. Asian American Groups Are Coming Down on Fox for Watters’ ‘Chinatown’ Video
Wed Oct 5, 2016, 06:12 PM
Oct 2016

Earlier today, we told you about the new Jesse Watters video that has been causing a stir. We also told you that Bill O’Reilly himself admitted that Fox News would be getting a lot of “letters” over the clip, which featured Watters running through Chinatown and asking people on the street about the election, karate, performance-enhancing herbs, possibly stolen watches, and whether he should bow before speaking to Chinese Americans.

O’Reilly was right! Fox News has been hearing from people. Those people aren’t just writing comments on YouTube and Mediaite dot com, though! Some of them are heavy-hitters from big organizations and they are none too pleased with Watters’ antics.

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund weighed in:

I often wonder if anyone has ever punched him out. Although he probably has "Security" people just off screen at all times. Given that he's been gratuitously offensive to so many for so long, there has to be someone that is going to do it, statistically.

Hell, the video would be sufficient to make the person a hero to everyone with a minimum of three functioning brain cells, rather than evidence against them. I'm sure many people would swear to being in bed with them in a different time zone, on general principles. As a public service.
