Politico talked with several of its anonymous GOP operatives this week and asked them whether they thought Mike Pence would beat Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical matchup and an overwhelming majority of them said, Yes.
............
Some of them then went on to note that Hillary Clinton should be an easy candidate for nearly any mainstream Republican to defeat and that further reflects on what a terrible candidate Donald Trump has been.
The creepy clown walking around Green Bay would beat Hillary Clinton in 30 states, said one Nevada Republican. Fortunately for Hillary, she is running against Donald Trump.
Right now, Donald Trump is the only Republican in the United States whom Hillary Clinton can defeat, seethed a North Carolina Republican. Trump is the best candidate on the ballot for Democrats in 2016.

(45,020 posts)They have a fantasy Hillary they're competing with
that they've completely fabricated in their own imaginations
and wrapped it all up in hate-spittled conspiracy theory.
They can keep under-estimating us all they want.
Fine with me. They just won't know what hit them.
They can't comprehend that there are people who would still prefer Clinton, that there are people who actually like Clinton. Idiots. I think she'd destroy Pence. Pence is such a smarmy phony.

(59,504 posts)In any election, many on the other side ask how anyone could vote for the opponent. What they are saying of Hillary is no different that what we said of anyone from Reagan to GHWB to W to Trump. The interesting thing is that they are saying this NOW before the election.
When an election appears to be clearly going against them, there are two choices - they can argue that the fault is that this is "not really their year" - ie "any Republican would have lost in 2008" - or they can blame the nominee. Here, blaming the nominee means they do not need to look at how the views of the party are increasingly out of sync with the country. My guess is that they were happily looking at the right direction/wrong direction polls and thinking this advantaged them as the party not in the WH. My guess is that they failed to notice that both the Republican and Democratic Congress had far lower approval numbers than Obama and the Republicans were lower than the Democrats.
Because our nominee is HRC, whom they hate, the second becomes almost more likely than the first as soon as she is highly favored to win. The reason, IMO, is that their heads would explode trying to use the first argument when HRC is the nominee - with her as the nominee, going with this was a Democratic year (ignoring that the woman they hate is the nominee) means they need to accept that more people want to continue with the Democrats even led by HRC.
Add to that, that we have never seen a candidate with as many real skeletons as Trump who routinely says and tweets so many asinine things. I don't think either McCain or Romney ran great or even good campaigns, but they were head and shoulder better than Trump.

(33,198 posts)Keep in mind Trump was hand selected by your primary process as the BEST candidate of the 18 or so best candidates your party had to offer. Your constituents think he's the BEST!
Sincerely,
Hugin.

(29,223 posts)we didn't nominate the batshit crazy racist misogynistic xenophobic authoritarian to be president. Your party did.
And that's because a plurality of your party members are racist misogynistic homophobic xenophobic bigoted batshit crazy idiots (note the match ups with your candidate).
And guess what, you all MADE THEM that way. You were ever so happy to support the right wing radio talk show hosts, starting with Reagan you told them that government WAS the problem, you promoted Fox "News" and the lies that it has filled the weak minded followers.
You basically somehow mainstreamed the John Birch Society... which was on the verge of dying out, but with Reagan and W and Limpballs and the rest... it has come roaring back.
Doesn't help that you attacked the unions and stopped the expansion of the middle class. In the sixties a high school educated factory worker could make enough money to send the kids to college for a better and brighter future... but you killed all that. Trickle down! Unions are stupid! Free Trade is the way to go! So now you have a generation (or two) of uneducated and out of work ("would you like fries with that" deplorables that listen almost exclusively to insane nutjobs on Fox and talk radio and they nominated Trump.
Don't come whining to us about how unfair this election is or how Trump is the worst candidate you could come up with... you all engineered and supported this all the way to the bottom.
Own it assholes.
Nay
(12,051 posts)nominate! Each of their candidates had one (or two) serious, serious flaws that totally handicapped them. Several were out-and-out crazy; several were bizarre religious nuts; a couple were so bland and ineffectual in campaigning that they showed they didn't want the job; etc. The time to fix your candidate pool was way back then, folks. But most of you signed on to the Trump campaign in the end, so you get to eat what you bought.
Maybe next time you'll do your selection of appropriate candidates behind closed doors and make more of an effort to screen out the nuts. The nuts have been your base, however, so you gotta think about that.
Frankly, I hope the Republican leadership finally realize just how far overboard they have gone by catering to tea partiers, religious crazies, racists and sexists, abortion screamers, etc., and revert to a saner platform that's actually conservative, not whacko.

If GOP "operatives" are looking to fume at someone, they should be fuming at their base.
BTW, who was it, all these years, playing to the Tea Party troglodytes in the first place?
