I have a Mohawk great-grandmother, Zoe Brant, from Ontario, Canada. They say she was traveling with family friends named the Johnsons. I take after the English and Scandinavians ancestors physically, but I feel her inside me always. They say she was feisty and lively and adventurous. I remember that when I feel afraid. And I love my Native American relatives!

(4,305 posts)Columbus did not prove the world is round! Ancient Greeks, Arabs, Polynesians, and other seafaring people already knew that! The Bible mentions the roundness of the world. Probably people on this continent also knew it. Apparently, it is obvious once you get out to sea. An approaching ship is first sighted by the top of its mast, then the rest gradually appears, as if it were coming up over a hill. A collection of scientists in Europe had already drawn up a new calendar based on accurate charting of the stars and moon, using some math skills learned from various Asians. They had rediscovered the writings of some ancient Greeks who had pretty accurately measured the Earth's circumference (I think I read that they used lighthouse beams, measuring sticks, and strings?). Columbus had trouble getting funding for his voyage because he believed the Earth was smaller (about the size of Mars(?), and most educated people knew he was wrong. The lie about Columbus proving the roundness of the world is pure propaganda!
Native Americans discovered America! That is well established. So this really should be Native American Day! Or whatever it would be in some Native American language!
