And somewhere in an undisclosed location (perhaps Russia?) Paul Manafort is smiling.
Former Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych--who fled to Russia after his bloody crackdown on demonstrators protesting his ties to Putin and the Kremlin failed to stop the protests--was a former client of Manafort's.

Former Ukraine Premier Is Jailed for 7 Years
By ELLEN BARRYOCT. 11, 2011
KIEV, Ukraine From the moment President Viktor F. Yanukovich took office last year, a central question was whether he would lead Ukraine west, toward Europe, or into a tight symbiosis with the countrys Soviet-era masters in Moscow.
Nineteen months of cautious navigation hit a watershed on Tuesday, when a court in Kiev sentenced the countrys most prominent opposition politician, Yulia V. Tymoshenko, to seven years in prison. European leaders have condemned the case as politically motivated, and hinted that they are unlikely to ratify a free trade and association agreement with Ukraine, a project four years in the making.
Ms. Tymoshenko, an acerbic populist who represents the European-leaning west of the country, rose to drown out the judges voice as he read out the verdict, speaking directly to a bank of television cameras.
This is an authoritarian regime, she said. Against the background of European rhetoric, Yanukovich is taking Ukraine farther from Europe by launching such political trials. As bailiffs led her from the courtroom, Ms. Tymoshenko turned in the doorway to wave goodbye, a small figure in a white coat and a helmet of blond braids.

Before he fled to Russia two years ago, Mr. Yanukovych and his Party of Regions relied heavily on the advice of Mr. Manafort and his firm, who helped them win several elections. During that period, Mr. Manafort never registered as a foreign agent with the United States Justice Department as required of those seeking to influence American policy on behalf of foreign clients although one of his subcontractors did.
It is unclear if Mr. Manaforts activities necessitated registering. If they were limited to advising the Party of Regions in Ukraine, he probably would not have had to. But he also worked to burnish his clients image in the West and helped Mr. Yanukovychs administration draft a report defending its prosecution of his chief rival, Yulia V. Tymoshenko, in 2012.
