In Boston, former US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords urges support for stronger gun laws
BOSTON Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat who became an advocate for gun control after she was shot in 2011, came to Boston on Friday to urge voters to support 2016 candidates, including Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who support gun control.
"Stopping gun violence takes courage, the courage to do what's right, the courage of new ideas," Giffords said in her brief remarks.
The press conference featuring Giffords and other politicians came against the backdrop of the shooting of two police officers in East Boston who were responding to a call for a domestic disturbance Wednesday night. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said the officers remained in "critical but stable condition" at Massachusetts General Hospital Friday morning. The police killed the shooter, Kirk Figueroa, who did not have a Massachusetts gun license.
Other speakers at the press conference included U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy and U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark, all Massachusetts Democrats, Attorney General Maura Healey and gun control advocates. The event was part of the 2016 Vocal Majority Tour, organized by Giffords and her husband, NASA astronaut Capt. Mark Kelly, in which Giffords and Kelly are traveling around the U.S. urging support for candidates who favor stronger gun control measures.
