Bill Clinton's lie that led to his impeachment: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky."
In no way defending his behavior, but this this is what the Republicans had against him.

Why not stick to the election at hand?

(231 posts)that every fucking thing the Trump campaign says is at best a misrepresentation. I want people who maybe weren't even alive at the time to know that this is what they are talking about when they bring up Bill Clinton's "lies" to Congress.
And I don't need to be reminded that Bill isn't running, but the Trump camp does.
Do the youngsters here know that Ken Starr was on a goddam witch hunt for women to slam BC with, and even Ken Starr didn't feel Juanita Broaddrick's story was strong enough to warrant prosecution?
And yes, I know Bill isn't running, but maybe you didn't notice Ms. Broaddrick there in the audience of the second debate?

If your point was that Trump is dishonest, that's not a revelation.
Personal opinion: avoid the noun 'youngsters' in speech and text.
If you want to slam Ken Starr, there is ample material for a separate post for that purpose. I will happily read it.

They will continue to dig and dig into Hillary. The good news is that they have exhausted their digging. There's nothing left else they would have brought it up.
She will be investigated her entire Presidency unless we give her huge majorities to work with in Congress.

(4,490 posts)I wasn't of voting age, but the uncovering of the Lewinsky scandal at that time was a direct result of their extreme efforts to destroy President Clinton. I think you forgot Whitewater and Vince Foster's death, both of which predated Lewinsky. Lewinsky was just their "gotcha" moment, when they actually found something that would stick.

(23,745 posts)The Republicans have made it an art form to smear Democratic candidates. They did a masterful job with the Clintons. Hillary was a progressive, outspoken First Lady which didn't fit their mold. Bill Clinton's approval ratings were at 50% or higher during most of his presidency. They did everything they could to destroy both of them while he was in office.

(10,724 posts)I don't think full-on impeachment was justified (especially since his term was nearly up), but realistically I don't think he would have won another election. Politically he was finished.
Which brings up - if the repugs are still so tie up in angry knots over Bill Clinton's treatment of women, why do they back another guy who's treatment of women is worse? I suppose they say Bill is worse, as if that justifies electing someone not as bad, but for the "party of family values" that just stinks of hypocrisy.
Every time Trump's nastiness is mentioned as making him unelectable, they immediately bring up Bill Clinton, whose behavior made him unelectable. In neither case is it excusable, but they want to excuse trump. Why? Just because they are stuck with him whether they like it or not - party loyalty over morality; a stupid choice in the long run if they want to actually stand for anything.
