I don't think there has ever been a politician in US History who has blatantly and single handedly destroyed their own political party as effectively as Trump has. I realize, it's really all these fools who voted for him, but at any point over the past 6 months he has had the opportunity to turn it around and try to be a normal respectable candidate, and he does the opposite every chance he gets.
Now, not only is he heavily favored to lose, but the Repubes are likely going to lose the Senate also. I don't think I've ever seen someone fail so spectacularly in politics, on such a grand scale. This is amazing.

he's self destructing now, and taking down as much around him as he can
sure he's hurting the GOP, but he's also hurting over half the people in this country, causing foreign relations problems and damaging faith in democracy itself
this morning, my wife was in tears over how vulgar and heartless tRump and his followers are. even in a blueberry state like Oregon, 37% of the electorate is still planning to mark the bubble for a racist, xenophobic, fraudulent, narcissistic, misogynistic sexual predator. they may be a minority, but they're a vocal, obtrusive, violent minority, with a tendency to be armed.
for a while i was laughing giddily at the prospects of tRump demolishing the Republican party, but this kind of remodeling comes with a high price tag. as i've said before, we're looking at a significant political realignment, but there's a process to go through en route and it isn't going to be pretty or painless.

(901 posts)Out of sheer frustration over this entire rotten experience, including what it's doing to my own family. My brother has been regrettably backing Trump, which has caused a rift in our family. My poor mom, in her 70s, was on the phone with him yesterday doing battle. She did awesome, pointing out the idiocy of his claims, but was extremely upset and called me following a nasty, nasty experience with him. He has become suspicious, belligerent, selfish, and mean-spirited, just like Trump and his followers. Thinks all of the women who came forward are liars, pointing out that he doesn't believe the woman on the plane because she'd stated that if Trump had just kept to her upper body she might not have been upset (or something like that); therefore, they're all liars. Thinks the media is unfair, etc., and is positive his taxes will go sky high if Clinton is elected. Mom, though, is very engaged in this election and went toe-to-toe with him and by the end of the call, my brother had moved from supporting Trump to not planning to vote, which he snarled at her as if Mom had taken away his favorite toy. She was rattled and upset by his lack of facts and open hostility towards Hillary Clinton and President Obama and even towards people who struggle financially, and so on.
Anyway, like many, I feel exhausted and upset with this entire election and what it's doing to our country and our families and even me personally. I need my life back and we all need to heal after what Trump and the GOP have done to us.

(23,967 posts)by poisoning his followers, tRump has poisoned us all. they aren't just islands unto themselves, they're Americans with families who may disagree, and tRump is destroying, among many other things, the ability for people to disagree politically without stressful escalations.
i've noticed it myself - people are less friendly, less forgiving overall. as a white male, i now often feel hostility directed toward me as there's a relatively high chance i could be a tRump supporter, hence a racist mansplaining jackass. our national elections have often boiled over into the commons and civilian life, but this time it's especially poignant and nasty.

And I'm sure he will have a ripple effect on state and local races as well.
Thanks Chump.

(49,533 posts)1. Lee Atwater really got the ball rolling with his nasty, vicious, personal attacks on Democrats. He made it permissible to launch the kind of baseless, hateful charges against Democrats that we're now used to seeing. On his deathbed he regretted it, but too late mofo.
2. Media-savvy Republicans in the 80s who successfully started the meme that the media is liberal.
3. Newt Gingrich and his development of the scorched earth / spoiled child political strategy.
4. Roger Ailes / Rupert Murdoch for launching FOX "News" and making it acceptable for a media outlet to fabricate stories and purposely slant their coverage to "balance" things out. (See #2 above.)
Putting all that together allowed the GOP to succeed in crafting and supporting a false narrative of how terrible (traitorous) the Democrats are, and programmed their base to uncritically accept what they are told (and dismiss anything reported that they don't like).
A demagogue like Drumpf was bound to happen, and here he is.
