U.S. Rep. Rush Holt warns of risk in use of military drones in letter to President Barack Obama

A Hunterdon County congressman has sent a letter to the president critical of military drone strikes and asking him for an explanation.

Rush Holt, D-Hunterdon, was one of 26 members of Congress to send a letter to President Barack Obama last week about the "profound" risk caused by the use of drones.

"Our goal in writing this letter is both to obtain the information we seek as overseers and to highlight for the (Obama) administration the need to rethink its approach to using drones,” Holt said Friday in an email.

The letter, signed by 24 Democrats and two Republicans, cites a recent article by The Washington Post which claims the president has given increased authority for a new drone campaign in Yemen.

The expanded authority, according to the article, would allow the CIA and U.S. Joint Special Operations Command to fire on suspected terrorists even when the identity of those who could be killed is not known.
