A magical end to a magical match-up. Both teams should be proud.

(36,437 posts)It was hard to root against either.
The best player for Cleveland (Kipnis) grew up a staunch Cubs fan in Northbrook (a near north suburb of Chicago).
Class acts in both dugouts.
It was right and proper that it should go to seven, and extra innings at that.

(65,057 posts). . .there were guys in Cleveland gear standing behind him and they were most civil. There was guy with a Cubs hat on and everybody was quite cool with one another.
Pretty classy given their team just lost the championship.

Chicago's last President was also a great gift to the country and damn if the Chicago deserves this win for that alone.

Full respect to the Cubs. They earned this victory with hard work, skill and diligence.
Go Cubs go!!

(40,416 posts)It played out the same way. But in 68, Mickey Lolich pitched three complete games, winning all three.
BTW, he hid his grip on the ball behind his beer belly when men were on base.
But yes, I'll take this World Series as second best ever.

(50,254 posts)I was down at the Thurston County Dem HQ in Olympia phonebanking and listening to the game. When my ride home showed up, it was still 6-3 and there was one out in the eighth. By the time we got home, it was tied. I didn't have the strength to watch the bottom of the ninth.
I wonder if anybody in Cleveland or Chicago had any stomach lining left by the end of that game.
We'll hear more from the Tribe. They are far from done.

(135,425 posts)Cubs fans waited 22 years longer than we did; but we came closer more often, which doesn't make it better--it makes it worse.
I always said that if the Sox couldn't do it, my 2nd choice was the Cubs. There is an affinity in the process of suffering.
What Cubs fans don't quite yet realize is that the glow lasts a long time. A REALLY LONG TIME. I can still feel the glow from 2004. It's life - changing and life - affirming!
I think it's a portent -- that's Hillary's team, after all!

(2,252 posts)a good friend of mine who is a Cleveland fan is very sad. He wanted to see the Indians vs. the Cubs but he didn't want his team to replace the Cubs as the one with the longest championship drought.

I'm a diehard Cubs fan and this is awesome night.
Hats off to the Indians though. They played phenomenal ball.

That one Cleveland pitcher especially seemed superhuman.

(10,893 posts)always have a special place in my heart (even though I wasn't old enough to see it), but I agree. This WS was among the best I've seen. Each of the games were competitive, and everything came right down to the wire in 7 games and in extra innings.

I'd have to say the answer to those questions is decidedly no, now. Or at least until the next drought happens.
My team won in 1987 and 1991, but it's been a hard slog ever since. Granted, that's only 20+ years, so we have 80 to go.

(40,416 posts)That entire series was incredible. Bob Gibson for the Cards was awesome -- 17 strikeouts in a World Series game!!!
But the Tiger's Mickey Lolich won three complete games, and even homered in one of them. Now that was excitement!
And yes, the Tigers were down 3-1 before they brought it back and won.
Oh! Before I forget... GO CUBS!!!

(17,438 posts)Rangers needed only one strike to win the championship on two different occasions in the game. Both times the Cards got hits (including a HR) to tie the game, eventually winning it in inning 12. Cards went on to win game 7 and the series. Last night was, imo, 2nd best game in World Series history.
