When we do work, the money represents a debt the culture owes us for that work. We can redeem that debt for the goods and services we need. It's a system that has worked off and on, but only when labor hasn't been as devalued as it now is.

Using it as a commodity in itself to try to fill an empty soul is where people run into trouble with it.

By itself, it's neither good nor evil, it's just a tool to keep score of what we owe and what we are owed. The problem is that so many of us have been short changed on what we are owed for a very long time.

1.not wondering where your next meal is going to come from
2. Not wondering how you can afford your anti cancer drugs , when the company you worked for, sacked you for taking too much time off to get chemo.
3 not wondering if your kid will be OK because you don't have enough money to take them to the hospital
4 not having to take 3 hours a day to take buses to work or school, when there's money to afford a car which gets you there in 15 minutes.
5 not agonizing whether you have enough to eat AND pay the rent.

I remember growing up in the 70s and having nothing. I reasonably comfortable now. Money doesn't solve everything, but it does help relieve the stomach churning worry of not having any.
