General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy all-time favorite picture of our future President Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Hillary, just several months in to her first term as New York's senator, gets briefed in the rain at Ground Zero a couple of days after the September 11th attacks.
I don't know why I love this picture so much, but I do. I think it probably has to do with the complete lack of staging or glamour. It's raw, and even though her expression seems to be stonefaced, it's actually extremely emotional.
Here you have New York's senator not caring about the rain storm around her or what she's wearing or how her hair looks or anything superficial like that. Instead, she's only concerned about the situation and what just happened there and what it might mean moving forward.
It's gravitas personified. It shows me she's the serious leader we need and the serious leader we deserve.
I find it extremely powerful and moving and telling.
Dear God, we need to elect this woman our President on Tuesday.

That must be a sight!

(81,267 posts)Yet another "listening tour" - which has become her hallmark. Fact-finding. Lawyers call it "due diligence." Seems to me that's a mighty effective strategy for anyone who presumes to be a public servant. Which a Senator is. Which a President is, too.
That's something I've always admired about her, ever since I first started learning about her in 1992. I like how she's willing to get down into the weeds on something - an issue, a problem, a situation, a crisis, a need. For the purpose of understanding whatever it is - as fully and completely as possible. She's never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and dive in. Do ALL the wonk work, the nerd work. Making sure she knows as much as possible about whatever it is. She's like a walking, talking data base. When I read the LA Times interview with her during primary season, I was floored. Thought I "got" her already but I was wrong. I could feel myself growing more and more incredulous. She knew everything about every public policy and foreign policy they threw at her, including one particular matter involving some kid who had an obscure disease with a name that was, I think, six or seven syllables long. She knew about it, knew about the kid, knew about the status of research so far, and had been following his case. "CRIMINY," I mumbled, "is there NOTHING this woman doesn't know?"
That's why it never mattered to me when she discussed why she changed her mind on TPP, for example. What if it's not a politically-motivated flipflop? What if it's exactly what she said? That "you get more information." "You get new information." Why shouldn't you adjust your thinking on one matter or other, once you get new input about it that genuinely could change things? Don't we want that in a leader? Isn't that what we'd want a President to do? I like that about her. I like that A LOT.
I've said it before - I want those brains in the Oval Office.

(82,849 posts)Trump was busy being appalled by all those dancing Muslims he could see from Barad Dur. And thinking about his days as the greatest baseball player in the whole state of New York.

(62,270 posts)They booed her for showing up at some 9/11 event shortly after, as if she was there to make some kind of show of things. But she really cared and she really wanted to help. And she did help 9/11 disaster workers, credit she isn't given enough for.

She's still on the air, but on a political AM show now.
I cannot wait to hear her reaction on Wednesday.

(15,540 posts)She has what I would call a very sincere smile. It's not phony. It's a YUUUGE smile, just like when President Obama smiles. It is from the soul. To me, it says a lot about a person if they can show so much raw emotion in their face - whether it be a smile or sadness. Also, when you get to be her age you may have experienced a lot of really tough times, and if you can still find things to be joyful for and smile for and laugh about, then you are a true survivor. Lord knows she's been through some awful treatment in her life.
She is the genuine deal.

(63,221 posts)You can tell by looking at her that it was not about her, but about the victims that day.
Meanwhile, fools like Giuliani took the opportunity to bolster his pathetic ego by playing hero boy, but basically doing nothing but getting in the way of the real heroes.

(43,890 posts)The day we invaded Iraq, I took it down.
My brother, may he rest in peace, a marine, fought in Desert Storm I & II.
He was there for the invasion. Leading a tank.
The atrocities he saw, the things he told us, are still seared in my memory.
Of earth movers burying Iraqi troops in their foxholes by the thousands.
Still alive.
The day we invaded Iraq, I took the American flag down from my porch.
Waiting for a time when I would be proud to wave Old Glory again, proud of my country's comportment on the world stage.
Hopefully, our next President, HRC, will bring closure to that painful episode.
I want to be proud again of who we are.
I want to be proud of being an American.
I want to be proud to be the beacon of Liberty, and Equality, and Humanity once again.
The world needs us.
Desperately.
