Galimatias - A most excellent new-to-me word.

Courtesy of Dictionary.com's Word of the Day feature:

galimatias - confused or unintelligible talk. A perfect word for describing RWNJ blatherings.

I wish I had known this word during the 2008 campaign. It fits Palin perfectly.

And, kudos to any DUers who already knew this word.

I have always loved words and accumulated thousands of them, if I didn't understand exactly what they meant.

But this one is new to me.

...better-than-typical vocabulary because of this interest (not bragging - really, truly, so I hope it doesn't sound that way).

I have never even seen this word before. There are obscure words I have looked up and forgotten because of no opportunity to use them, but this was not one of them.

One of the things I enjoy most about DU is the level of verbal sophistication found here. Dare I say erudition? So many areas of expertise among the DU population.

My favorite word is masticate, because when most people here it they freeze.

"Where's Joe?"

"He's masticating in the break room"

...used the word niggardly in a public statement? Without looking it up, I do not recall the circumstances, but I sure do recall the you-know-what hitting the fan because most people didn't know the definition and were running around with their hair on fire. That is a word I would steer clear of just because of the general ignorance of so many people.

...article about this word, written by a black British scholar who was musing on whether or not to use this word when coming to the US.

Also, to correct myself, it was a mayoral aide, not a professor, who got in hot water.

it is a word I avoid, since so few use it anymore. Don't want to risk misunderstandings.
