Charges have been filed against State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister for using money from corporations to run attack ads during the 2014 election.

Court documents claim Hofmeister used about $1.5 million from a donor corporation to run a negative ads against incumbent Janet Barresi. She’s also accused of accepting donations larger than $5,000 and from corporations, which are violations of Oklahoma laws.

"The investigation reveals a conspiracy to commit campaign contribution violations and illegal coordination by members of Oklahomans for Public School Excellence, Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration and Oklahoma Education Association with political candidate Joy Hofmeister," court documents said. "American Fidelity wrote checks to both OEA and CCOSA for $50,000 each. OEA and CCOSA each added $100,000 of their own funds and donated the whole amount to OPSE.
