General Discussion

versions of the same story:
First CNN:
" Trump vented about media coverage, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity. He was highly critical of CNN and other news organizations.
But while Trump showed disdain for the news media, he also answered questions; listened to the journalists' arguments about the importance of access; and committed to making improvements.
A source in the room told CNNMoney that there was "real progress" made with regards to media access to Trump and his administration.
One specific topic was the importance of the "press pool," a small group of journalists that traditionally travels with the president.
The hour-long meeting was off the record, meaning the participants agreed not to talk about the substance of the conversations.
But Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway, who arranged the meeting, said afterward that it was "very cordial, candid and honest."

Now here is how the newspapers reported the meeting:
WashingtonPost:
"TV execs, hosts gather for contentious reset meeting with Trump"
"Heres how it went, according to our colleague Karen Tumulty:
On Monday afternoon, he had a contentious Trump Tower meeting with another one of his chief adversaries: members of the news media.
In the session with more than a dozen television executives and on-air journalists, Trump was highly critical of coverage of him, according to several people familiar with the gathering. Keeping his voice calm and his tone flippant, he told the group sitting around a conference table that they failed to provide their viewers with fair and accurate coverage and told them they failed to understand him or his appeal to millions of Americans.
Trump expressed particular ire at CNN and at several reporters at other cable networks whom he sees as unreasonably antagonistic toward him, though he did not mention them by name."

The NY Times reported a similar story to the Washington Post. Perhaps this is why Trump cancelled the meeting with the NY Times:

For those who are under the false illusion that someone MSNBC is better, remember they were the first network who LIED that the "FBI had reopened the email investigation", and then began to parade every right wing politician across their screen for their opinion.
A few days later when it was calming down, Fox news bret baier came out and said "from his sources in the FBI a indictment was pending on the Clinton Foundation". That was a lie, but google news, and other outlets propagated that lie. 48 hours later, bret baier came out and apologized, saying his information about a "pending indictment was wrong". Rachael Maddow went out of her way to throw "gushing" praise on bret baier for "admitting the mistake". Of course that didn't stop fox network from continuing to spew the lie, along with the trump campaign.
This country is in serious trouble. The FBI interference with the election, and now the very real possibility that a trump administration is trying to interfere with the press coverage.

(14,855 posts)The fact that they agreed to such a meeting reeks of collusion to me!
If anything, they (and Comey) screwed Hillary Clinton with their non-stop private e-mail server nonsense.
Meanwhile, Trump had a gazillion scandals, but each one was forgotten as a new one came along. Then the Trump scandal reports dropped off in the final week as Comey's supposed "reopening" of the e-mail investigation received lots of coverage.
The majority of voters who decided in the final week voted for Trump according to exit polls.
Many Americans have very short attention spans or they don't really pay attention until the end! I see that same behavior in sports when some team that recently played a good game is suddenly catapulted, in the eyes of many, above a team that crushed them a few games earlier.

(58,785 posts)Reporting on it is their job, journalism their purpose, not warfare. Decent working relationships are imperative, and meetings are entirely appropriate.
But otherwise I agree entirely with the gist of this thread. TV/cable coverage has already long been badly corrupted by focus on profits, and journalistic principles were discarded a long time ago now. Trump's victory is in large part their for-profit creation, and they're not going to commit corporate and personal suicide to suddenly perform their proper role in society.
To be informed, people must read the news reported by media that still engage in investigative journalism.

(4,426 posts)And the overwhelming majority of print and broadcast media cares about money, not their role as a check on abusive power.
This perfect storm has been a long time in the making. The fascists are not going to waste the opportunity. Most of the press will become collaborators, because that will be where the money is.

(23,105 posts)Will it be the judiciary or the constitution itself? I think it's judiciary then the constitution, in that order. Ethics laws are already rendered nonsensical, he's blatantly using the office to sell his plans to other countries, plans that benefit him and not the country. Everything he's proposed is very anti-worker and very pro oligarchs. Bye bye America, hello Nazis.
