the news after we got to class after lunch. School let out immediately and we all went home and watched tv non-stop for days. It was a dark and terrible time.

Whatever news outlets means?

Why? because most Americans probably never even heard of JFK.

And I went to his funeral.

With Natalie Portman.

and will remember to the end of my life.

The funeral procession of the riderless horse and the drum beats still make both I and my spouse shiver..

Several of us decided we would go to the funeral and drove all night, I think, to DC.

Stayed with a friend who lived sort of within walking distance. a LONG, LONG walking distance..
We stood at the end of the bridge the procession crossed. It was cold. Silent. If you google photos of the procession I am sure we are in one of the photos of the procession crossing the bridge.

On edit: I remember.. as a music student, when I heard the 'funeral march' I knew it was from one of the Chopin piano sonatas...in fact the 4 of us all knew it...

I remember the drum tempo quite clearly, as well as the tragic strains of Chopin's Funeral March

before we left AND after we returned, much the TV coverage, at least all I remember, used the 2nd movement from the Beethoven 7th Symphony as a background 'funeral march. It is actually marked Allegretto, but does sound a little funeral-like.

when actually the 2nd mvt in his 3rd Symphony IS marked Marcia funebre - Adagio assai .

in fact the first in my lifetime and I have seen three more since then- 2000-2004-2016. PTB don't like you you're dead, otherwise they will, if they want you in bad enough, install their candidate and make us think we lost the election. I fear since 63 the charade has been ongoing culminating with our new fuhrer. I really do wish we had another Kennedy, but all that had a chance at POTUS ended up assassinated or dead in a plane malfunction.....

We had moved to Bakersfield, CA from the Mississippi Delta so my dad could get a better paying teaching job. My dad had been a member of the White Citizens' Council, and they both hated MLK and the Civil Rights Movement with a passion. They soon extended that hostility towards JFK and the Democratic Party, and by the time Kennedy was assassinated, they had become Republicans and were devoted Goldwater volunteers. They demonized Kennedy so much, I temporarily thought this was a positive development, like Khrushchev dying, or something. That was a very brief reaction, though, as I immediately got caught up in the national grief and mourning, one of the first times I realized my family's whacked views were not universally held.

My mom later became constituent representative for Bill Thomas, chair of House Ways and Means. My dad became mayor. Racism is the basis for the "modern" Republican Party, no matter how many times they call themselves the "Party of Lincoln." (Gag.)
