The 306 electors for Trump were hand picked by the Trump campaign. This isn't like early US history before the emergence of the two dominant parties today.

In your state when you vote you are voting for a slate of elector hand picked by either Trump or Clinton and depending on who wins the state that slate of electors ends up representing the state.

So it is essentially like taking a poll of a Trump rally attendees on if Trump should win.

Yes a few electors would need to defect but the EC isn't even close. Hell 6 electors defecting would be radical but that would still given him 300 (or 30 more than he actually needs). The idea that 25% of the hand picked most diehard of the diehard Trump supports would suddenly defect at the last minute is just wishful thinking.
