Binders Keepers

Trump has jumped the shark

I discerned a change in the coverage today--the media outlets are suddenly calling a spade a spade:

"Trump Falsely Claims Popular Vote Win" (CNN)
"Trump Claims 'Millions' Voted Illegally, Citing No Evidence" (NYT)
"Trump Makes Unfounded Claim . . . ." (NPR)

Seems that Trump has finally stepped over the line with such an outrageous claim that the media have collectively abandoned their usual false equivalency approach for instead just rolling their eyebrows. About time.

"Trump Falsely Claims Popular Vote Win" (CNN) ==> "Trump Truly Claims Popular Vote Win"
"Trump Claims 'Millions' Voted Illegally, Citing No Evidence" (NYT) ==> "Trump Claims 'Millions' Voted Illegally, Citing Irrefutable Evidence"
"Trump Makes Unfounded Claim . . . ." (NPR) ==> "Trump Makes Well-founded Claim"
and his not-so-core supporters are going to go along with this while they have something to gain from it.

this is where we are now. the media are in a mad scramble for survival in this new age where Trump might just install Alex Jones as press secretary. what will they have to do to maintain access without sacrificing audience share? don't count on the press to help us out with this monster, ever.

though I doubt many of them knew what they were voting for.
'Change' was all they heard. Gutting the social safety net uncovers
long term financial considerations for households, even solvent ones.
I still say recession in 6 to 9 months. Consumerism rings hollow when
your country is being politically ransacked.

Now that the election is over, they will report on him. They have no reason not to report all of the evil, crazy, stupid things that he will say and do. It will get viewers which will make money. Since it is a given that Trump will be a complete train wreck, people are going to be tuning in to see everything. More and more of his supporters will turn from him when he does not deliver on his promises and actually makes their lives much worse. He is still surprised and pissed off that Hamilton and Saturday Night Live "attacked" him.

a good job. But vigorous reporting and investigation isn't generally characteristic of cable news or most print media, especially mainstream entities.

There are a lot of people in the GOP who are not directly criticizing Trump but (I'm guessing) likely don't like him either. They want control of their party back, even though they lost it long ago, shooting themselves in the foot by letting the far right religious kooks in the front door.

Now they see that control of their party is in the hands of a brainless egomaniac. They can't control him. Events may conspire to undermine a Trump presidency, but other events may conspire to glorify it. It's a gambler's finish, and there's no help for it at the moment.

The Democratic Party could use some writers -- good ones -- who can frame the issues confronting the electorate. 'Stronger Together' is not a particularly motivating phrase. We need good writers to write ads for a nationwide campaign emphasizing the timeless merit of public education, public transportation, and sound public health.

Trump's administration will attack all three of those things with all they've got. Let's defend the fort.
