Joe Arpaio is no longer Sheriff.

This is an historic moment for Maricopa County and the Phoenix Metro Area. I didn't think we would get rid of him until he died.

The fact that he's being replaced by a somewhat moderate alternative gives me hope for the future.

But this really is a special moment for my community. I hope DU realizes the gravity of this change. We just kicked "America's Toughest Sheriff" out on his ass.

One of the few gains in these times.

We have done well in Illinois, too. We now have Tammy Duckworth as our Senator.

We have to fight our way back to sanity, bit by bit.

I'll be back in Tucson in a couple of months and hopefully, there will be no more Sheriff Joe's in AZ future.
Lived in Phx in the 90s and hated him back then too.

He's a huge supporter of both Arpaio and Trump.

His term is ending, and he will be succeeded as Sheriff by another Republican who won election to the job.

Babeu chose to run for a U.S. House seat. He won the primary but lost the general election, so he will be out of a job.

Yes, Douchy next would be great.

*titled thusly not because of the inevitable blue tsunami on the horizon but for the current sad state of affairs, i.e.:

How to measure democratic decline

Here, Reynolds is drawing on research he’s conducted alongside Aarhus University's Jørgen Elklit and Harvard/University of Sydney's Pippa Norris through the Electoral Integrity Project. The cornerstone of the project, which Norris and two other collaborators described for Vox here, is the Perceptions of Electoral Integrity survey, which asks political experts in each country where it's conducted a battery of questions about each stage of elections, from whether ballots are fairly tallied to whether newspapers provide voters with adequate information to whether districts are divided fairly. Their responses are then tallied into ratings on a 0 to 100 scale: 100 indicating electoral processes with the most integrity, 0 with the least.

NC got the headlines but AZ actually scores the worst among U.S. states.

As a home owner and resident of Maricopa county, it was my privilege to work for the defeat of crusty, stubborn old sheriff Joe. He has been a pain in our tails and bank accounts far too long. Welcome Sheriff Paul Penzone and best wishes.
