Man alleges ageism after getting banned from Starbucks for asking teen barista on date

SPOKANE, Wash. — A 37-year-old man says he was banned from a Starbucks in Washington state after asking a 16-year-old barista out to dinner, CBS Spokane affiliate KREM reports.

The man, who was not identified by KREM since he has not been charged with a crime, said he was at Starbucks in Spokane last week and wrote a note asking out a barista.

“I was flirted with by a barista. For some reason she thought I was funny. Said I was funny. So I gave her a note to see if she’d be interested in dinner,” the man wrote in a Facebook post.

He said that when he went back the next day, a police officer told him he was banned from the Starbucks.

I felt insulted by a very elderly woman who snapped at me that she was married when I complimented her perfume while standing in line at a bank years ago (when I was about 20 years old).

The absolute worst experience was me complimenting a housekeeper when I worked at a hotel. She was married and had about 5 kids (Catholic). She asked about my recent divorce (from a woman who cheated on me), and I later said that I wished I'd married someone as nice and faithful as her. It wasn't flirtatious at all! I was trying to compliment her apparent devotion to her husband and children.

Long story short, a nightmare developed over the next few weeks that culminated with her asking me to run off with her back to Portland OR (where her parents resided)! She was going to leave her husband and all of the kids behind! I had previously turned her away with "kid gloves" to spare her feelings, suggesting that she seek marriage counseling and the like, but I finally screamed that her behavior was very disturbing to me, making me even MORE distrustful of women and how I would never be with someone like her! Stay the hell away from me forever! That finally did the trick!

It's more dangerous for women/girls overall, though. It's not like I thought the kooky housekeeper was going to rape me!

Reggie came from a wealthy and politically connected family and her parents and the Kennedys had known each other for decades. She is a person of tremendous strength, talent, and accomplishment and is widely credited for providing the support and stability that led to a focused and productive era in Ted Kennedy's life and career. It is intolerable to dismiss her as an arm candy trophy wife. Not to mention the fact that there is a tremendous difference between approaching a professional woman in her 30s in a social setting, and a teenage barrista at her place of employment.

For 16-17 year olds, the adult must be less than four years older.

The purpose of this restriction is to allow the underclassman to continue dating the upperclassman when the older one becomes an adult at 18 while still in school.

I've been 37, but it was a long time ago. I can't imagine asking anyone that age or even near it for a date when I was 37. I suspect the guy was imagining that she was flirting with him. Probably, she was just friendly and he mistook it for something else. Even if she had been flirtatious, it was clearly out of place for him to suggest a date.

Too much age difference there, I think. Even if she was in her early 20s. I know that such relationships do start, sometimes, but they're out of balance and rarely amount to anything. They're usually exploitative on the part of the man, frankly.

Men should know better than that. They really should. It's inappropriate.

Edit to add: Well, I've been to this guy's website. He's a serious wackadoo. Dangerous, in fact. The young barista was right to pass that note on to her manager. And the management was right in banning him from the place. There's a website link for the man downthread. I read it. He's a weirdo.

I'm 49. I have to work in the same building with someone that sexually harassed me once. I reported it and was not believed. If I as a mature woman feel uncomfortable having to walk near this person occasionally, I'm sure this kid is scared out of her mind considering how weird this guy is.

Tue Jan 3, 2017, 09:07 AM

We had 1 kid in high school that was 17 that was having sex with a 14 or 15 yr old. Sex offender status started in high school. The kids just do not realize the implications of what they're doing at that age. Older guys with this goal see it as a green light.

You would not BELIEVE the things that are said between these kids on SM and text. I think it has made it normalized. Sure, every teen is at that place and experimenting, but now it is like they are shopping at the "mall" of partners where back in the day, our choices of partners were much more limited.

But ... if memory serves, we were all having a lot of sex. And smoking a lot of crappy weed.

Probably the main difference now is, the weed is better, and there's something of an electronic/texting trail of the activities which for us were confined to "backrooms, alleys, or trusty woods", to rip off a Bob Seeger song. I could be wrong, but I do know that every generation hits a certain age and is predictably horrified by "kids today", like clockwork.

And no way should two high schoolers who have sex with each other be guilty of anything save perhaps poor judgment. That is a terrible misapplication of the law, assuming everything is consensual.

36. Oh, I bet. After years at a funky retail gig, I developed a math formula:
Mon Jan 2, 2017, 06:25 PM
Jan 2017

Something like 70% of the customer base- they're just there to get whatever it is, their latte or whatnot- all business, they're in, they're out, they pay, not terribly noteworthy either way.

Maybe 20% are super fucking cool, cool enough that maybe you become friends outside of the establishment, grab drinks after work, that kind of thing.

But that last 10%... ...

That's what will grind you down, after enough time. Kill your spirit. Turn you into someone who hates the human animal, in general.

And I was just an amicable if oft-hungover young dude. That's not even factoring in this other shit. Sure, sometimes women- or men- would hit on me, but it wasn't like the sorts of crap that any attractive young females would have to put up with.

Until the end of my days I will have extra sympathy for anyone having to deal with the public in their day to day- and beyond that, of course it's incumbent upon people to understand that the service "relationship" is just that; not to say that there NEVER develops anything beyond that, but--- just because the young woman who gives you your latte or scans your groceries smiles at you, doesn't mean she *likes* you, dork.

Mon Jan 2, 2017, 07:07 PM

One of my best friends dated a mother who got pregnant as a teen, married the dude shotgun style, then divorced and turned her life around by going to medical school. Her daughter should have felt loved, right? Unfortunately the "father" (read: sperm donor) moved across the country to avoid his child and she grew up without a father.

Fast forward 18 years and she just graduated high school and is living with a man in his early 40s. Literally fell for the first adult male who approached her at an all-ages club (and her mother thinks this started before 18). This isn't his first much younger girlfriend, it's happened before. She got fair enough grades and is in college though, so it's not all bad. At some point, hopefully she'll wake up and see this for what it is.

Point is, these guys play the numbers game. They'll approach 10 girls and 9 will rebuff them. They only need one.

all you are expected to get at a Starbucks restaurant is for them to make an attempt to get your drink right. It does not matter if the barista is 16 or 61, they are not expected nor obligated to respond to your attempt to get a date with them. Yes, ageism is a thing, and if they had insulted you because you are old or throw away your job application because your old, you might have a leg to stand on. Then again, and Trump swirled all of right to be fired states, they might not even know you that much. But never,, ever is a woman ever obligated to respond to your attempt to hit on her. I know the folks apply part might be working very hard to change this, but for every 16-year-old girl you think you have a right to hit on, there can be a mother with a shotgun, and a dad who knows a good lawyer. And even if neither mom nor dad are able to act, there will be someone who will see your age and the girls age and take steps appropriately.

Here's a hint, yes we know that Mr. Trump married a porn star who is young enough to be his daughter. However for what ever reason, Mrs. Trump accepted Donald's advances. Granted it can be fun to speculate as to what this woman found attractive about Donald. Personally I think it was because he possessed something that was rather large, and I am not talking about anything anatomical. The point is, if Donald tried to advance after Melania said no, he would be in a jail cell rather than in the White House.

Women have it hard enough in their jobs, especially 16-year-olds who have to start out at the low end of employment at work their way up to either making the best out of Starbucks or working towards whatever dream they have. They should not have to worry that they will be punished because old were middle-aged man wants to remain the same jerk they were in their 20s. Here's a newsflash, if you were an arrogant jerk that fought that you had a right to this girls affections when you're 20 chances are she probably would've rejected you too.

PS: how do you know that it wasn't the Starbucks manager that banned you? Maybe said manager realized that this became the place where 35-year-old man to hit on 16-year-old girls he or she might have lost customers. People go to Starbucks to relax and have coffee, if they wanted to go to a singles bar they know where to find a singles bar. do not forget that a lot of teenagers go to Starbucks because they cannot go to a singles bar, which we that if a Starbucks is known as the place were 35-year-olds else on 16-year-old girls, then mommy and daddy might not let their kids hang out at Starbucks, which means they lose money. The point is Starbucks had plenty of reason like any establishment does the ban you especially as you were in the act of trying to hit on their staff while they were doing their job.

The election of Trump has let all the dogs out of their cage.
