Life After January 20th, 2017

Many, if not most of us, have been living in nervousness, or outright dread, of January 20th, that day that “THEY” will take over our entire government, and all the levers of power.

However, I’ve come to realize that, ever since election day, I’ve been living with strong emotions that range from dismay, to rage, to fear. And the other realization that came to me was that this is no way to go through life.

We’re stuck, for the foreseeable future, with a nightmare government which is unpredictable, unanswerable, and could well equal those that have existed in the worst of human nightmares. Our options for opposing them are severely limited.

But here’s my point. All of us are on this earth for a limited period of time. I can only speak for myself, but I have let my preoccupation with politics, and the abuse thereof, consume far too much of my life. I have, in effect, created my own “den of misery” due to things over which I have little to no control. I have tried to come up with ways to oppose the realities that exist. And that opposition is an overwhelming task that will take decades, or more, to come to fruition and produce change.

So … I have decided to daily focus on things that I enjoy. (No, not Julie Andrews singing “My Favorite Things.”) I have realized that banging my head against a wall is not how I want to spend the rest of my life. And in keeping with that, I have set my car radio to a music only station, and I ignore my daily newspaper’s front section and read only local news, the comics, and movie reviews. In effect, I refuse to allow the evil that is abroad in our country to dominate all of my day to day life.

That doesn’t mean I’ve given up the fight. It means that I need time out, every single day, to hang onto reality and sanity in an unreal, insane environment. We all need that.

My suggestion for everyone who feels as I do, is to give yourself a break. Understand that it will take decades for us, and those who come after us and hold our beliefs and values, to set the world straight and restore sanity as the norm.

In the meantime, find time during the day to tune out. It will only make your life better. And yeah, I know that all of this “advice crap” may sound trite. Tomorrow, and the day after that, I may post another angry rant. But, unless you’re in a combat zone, (a true war zone with real bullets flying), only fanatics focus on fighting a war 24/7. Give yourself a break and a bit of peace of mind. Enjoy the parts of your life that give you pleasure. And only then, resume the battle.

Interacting with my family and friends, working in my garden, exercising, playing my guitars, and also marching and working with our social justice group on a variety of issues.

Balance is important.

For me, enjoying my work, family, friends, cats, garden, music, etc. Feeling gratitude for my life.

I don't want to know what's going on in the grotesque repuke carnival-- it's too much to take.

Since the election I probably watch news 2/24 and that's enough to make me depressed for the rest of the day. Haven't watched the disgusting lovebirds in months.

1) M$NBC has become more cozy with Trump. I've found CNN to be more balanced.
2) I miss Keith Olberman more than ever.
3) I can watch "Recount" over and over and not get tired of it.
4) My cats are loving more attention.
5) Food tastes better.
6) I still hate those Liberty Mutual commercials.

It's a void that has to be filled but I don't think I can keep up. The news today was too much-Clinton's going to inauguration, the Russia probe stopped, hiring of fox propaganda hosts at NBC. I don't believe in voting anymore so I gotta check out and live the rest of my life. I plan to protest then when that is outlawed or they kill people I will stop that too. YES that is what I expect to happen. Trump is a dictator wannbee. We are not going to have those freedoms for much longer. And Americans will probably say ho hum. We have our iphone19 and our computers and "both are just as bad" and those people deserved it. They will make up lies. We will never be respected because there is no more truth and honesty. Even on here-pretending it's okay to hand power to an madman. It's not okay. It's not okay.

politics now affects everything in your life, you could lose your health care, you could lose your job, your freedom to protest, your retirement, your wealth. your water, air quality. Your taxes will go up as the rich go down. You can't take a break from the fight. War has been declared on the working class and there are lots of traitors working for the other side.

I decided, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that I could be treated as a political dissident, or as a degenerate artist. I've decided I prefer the latter.

So I'm focusing much more on my photography, and much less on being outraged at the news (not that it's not outrageous). I'm seeking a different outlet for my opinions and emotions.
