It's real easy to say something early in an investigation that will scuttle the prosecution later, especially in cases involving discrimination.

What these young people did was horrendous and they need to be disciplined for it. Turning it into a public hate fest won't solve anything other than to appeal to the "our team vs. their team" folks. I would like to see a way for them to atone for their actions once they have served their time in jail (if that is the court ruling).
