amazed that is permitted and that hasn't happened more. I mean that is a no brainer there. If you need to take your
gun with you buy the f---g ammo at your destination.

(135,425 posts)You want your bag? Walk a quarter mile that-a-way, to the STATE POLICE airport office.
Those nice fellows with the sidearms will give you your bag, away from all those people in the terminal, and question you about your itinerary going forward.
The only exceptions should be TSA personnel going to work, and other law enforcement doing the same.
Also, your bag will be triple-wrapped in tight hot-pink shrink wrap once the presence of a weapon is established. You'll need a large knife to cut that shit off, and of course, you won't have one of those if you've just gotten off a plane.
Take your bag home, do not pass go....

(2,297 posts)Unlike ammo. There are not ammo stores everywhere. Also there are thousands of cartridges, but maybe only one that your gun shoots well. What are going to do, spend $10k on a bucket list hunting trip and $25 on ammo and miss your shot or have your gun jam?
You know the Trump boys hunt Africa. Do you really expect a lot of ammo stores there?
For the last 6 years, 22 ammo has been near impossible to get. In the last 2 months that has changed. Before that if you did not bring it, you were not getting it to shoot.

I really like the idea of shrink wrapping the suitcase.

(141 posts)The ammo is handmade by me for that gun. It is one if a kind, that has been calibrated to that gun.
And as you said. Ammo selection. .308 is easy to find. 257 Weatherby may not be as easy to get on short notice in a new state.

(35,338 posts)make it available near the airport. Ever hear of supply and demand. Hey if you go to Africa and hunt and they don't have the brand of ammo you want go out and sight your gun in with what they have available. It's in the outback in Africa I am sure you could find a place to shoot, maybe at your outfitters place. Or maybe let the animals have a live.

(2,297 posts)However in the real world.....you bring what you need. In South Africa for instance, a foreigner can buy a silencer for $100 in a store, totally legal. But they are not allowed to buy a single round of ammo. Now people are allowed to give them ammo legally. You can just imagine the extra legal quandry that one would be in if they showed up in South Africa without ammo. I suppose that you could tip your outfitter very well up front, nudge him in the ribs and say could you spare 100 rounds of 200 grain 300 Weatherby Nosler partitions. He might say sure, the next shipment will arrive in 3 months...... And while that might be $400 at Walmart in the US, in South Africa it is $1200.

(13,081 posts)Anyone can go to the baggage claim. Flying or not flying has nothing to do with this particular shooting. Letting domestic abusing, child pornographer, schizophrenics have guns is the big problem in this case.

(35,309 posts)Guns, ammo, knives. Anything that's safe in the belly of a plane.
Don't see the big deal.
I mean, recently I pulled up to the arrivals area of a major airport, got out of my car, and walked into the baggage area around midnight. Lots of very tired people standing and sitting around. If I had a gun in the trunk of my car and wanted to do damage to folks, it would have been like shooting ducks. Drugged, tired ducks all lined up on benches and at carousels, not actual wild ducks that could easily flee.
If I'd had explosives--something that's not allowed to be checked, something they screen for--I could have carried that into the baggage claim area.
We're trying to blame something nearby because we don't like it. What you put in checked luggage isn't the problem. Not sure gun banning/(over)regulation is a good answer, either. It's just a convenient, nearby answer because we don't like guns or trust others that aren't like us.
