BERLIN It was every God-fearing Christians worst nightmare about Muslim refugees. Revealed, the Breitbart News headline screamed, 1,000-Man Mob Attack Police, Set Germanys Oldest Church Alight on New Years Eve.
The only problem: Police say thats not what happened that night in the western city of Dortmund.
The Breitbart report has triggered a backlash in Germany, igniting fresh concerns over the manipulation of information and the societal cost of revenue-generating clickbait.
The report comes amid a rash of misleading rumors and social-media claims about refugees in the aftermath of the recent Berlin Christmas market attack, including " target="_blank">one missive falsely linking a refugee who once took a selfie with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to a holiday season assault on a homeless man.

(35,077 posts)Because that is what it is.
There is a whole systemic process here going on, like a failure on every level of memory, cognition, and perception.
The problem isn't fake news itself either, it's the following:
* Knowing it's false and still creating it
* Person reads it and accepts it without question
* Disseminating it while not looking for corroborating stories
* Ignoring any opinions or stories that might poke holes in it
* Story gets disproved and it does not damage the credibility of the person/organization who pushed the story and the person who read it will just say people who don't believe in the story are snowflakes or something
