Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI don't remember hearing that ANYONE voted for the whole Trump family! Now he's appointing his son-
in-law as his top adviser. It also sounds like Ivanka is going to get some kind of spot too. The Con said his business wass going to be run by all three of his kids, BUT NOW he said it will be the two sons but not Ivanka. The presidency isn't supposed to be a Royal Family!
It was bad enough that all of them were involved in the transition, but I didn't think it was going to continue!

They will allow him to destroy the country, but not his personal, highly in debt now, Trump empire. The GOP will go along with it as long as he signs their legislation without too much pushback.

(22,756 posts)as Robert Reich noted...
As tyrants take control of democracies, they typically:
1. Exaggerate their mandate to govern claiming, for example, that they won an election by a landslide even after losing the popular vote.
2. Repeatedly claim massive voter fraud in the absence of any evidence, in order to restrict voting in subsequent elections.
3. Call anyone who opposes them enemies.
4. Turn the public against journalists or media outlets that criticize them, calling them deceitful and scum.
5. Hold few if any press conferences, preferring to communicate with the public directly through mass rallies and unfiltered statements.
6. Tell the public big lies, causing them to doubt the truth and to believe fictions that support the tyrants goals.
7. Blame economic stresses on immigrants or racial or religious minorities, and foment public bias and even violence against them.
8. Attribute acts of domestic violence to enemies within, and use such events as excuses to beef up internal security and limit civil liberties.
9. Threaten mass deportations, registries of religious minorities, and the banning of refugees.
10. Seek to eliminate or reduce the influence of competing centers of power, such as labor unions and opposition parties.
13. Put generals into top civilian posts
14. Make personal alliances with foreign dictators.
15. Draw no distinction between personal property and public property, profiteering from their public office.
Consider yourself warned.

(6,436 posts)... Trump is actually legally barred from appointing family members to an official position. Thats all because of a federal law passed in 1967.
The law is pretty clear:
(b) A public official may not appoint, employ, promote, advance, or advocate for appointment, employment, promotion, or advancement, in or to a civilian position in the agency in which he is serving or over which he exercises jurisdiction or control any individual who is a relative of the public official. An individual may not be appointed, employed, promoted, or advanced in or to a civilian position in an agency if such appointment, employment, promotion, or advancement has been advocated by a public official, serving in or exercising jurisdiction or control over the agency, who is a relative of the individual.
...OF course, Trump no doubt subscribes tothe Nixon doctrine of legality: If the president does it, then it's not illegal. (!!!!!)

(45,806 posts)whether that law applies STAFF positions. There was a court ruling back when Bill Clinton appointed Hillary to lead the health care program and the Pubs sued him. The court ruled that the belief is that Congress didn't include staffers when barring relatives from serving in WH. Hillary, as well as Kuchner are/will be unpaid advisors to the President. '
There is no result yet.

(50,559 posts)Hillary I can believe - she was the wife of a man who earned $400,000 per year, she could afford to serve without pay. Kushner, OTOH, is supposed to be a financially-independent person.
If Kushner is working for free, Donald has to put all his assets in a blind trust, and Ivanka, Uday and Qusay are all working for free...how are these people going to be able to survive?

(50,559 posts)...their "personal savings accounts" are probably as empty as everyone here's. I have a hard time believing Trump could come up with the money to replace the furnace in Trump Tower without having to sell a building.
