(9,001 posts)I don't condone it. I don't endorse it. But I can also honestly say I understand the impulse.
The fact that I wouldn't act on it is what gives me my humanity.

I'm no making a case for or against this reality. It's just the way it is.

(2,959 posts)In fact in 55 years I can only recall reading about one molester being killed in a CA prison. That was an infant murder who was shived at San Quentin about 8 years ago.
Here in CA our biggest newsworthy issue is where registered sex offender parolees live after prison.
A notorious and famous old man who's never been incarcerated will not have a very easy time in the segregation unit.

(18,497 posts)At least not in a High Profile case like this.
But I don't see him living long anyway.
The stress of keeping up his denial in his new circumstances will probably cause him to deteriorate in health very rapidly.
I wish I could say I gave a molecule of sympathy for him.

(82,383 posts)What if it was just some personal motive of the killer?
Or did the killer have a "pure" motive, carrying out the death penalty against Dahmer specifically for Dahmer's crimes? Nice to know the justice system can be undermined by one of the very people who did not respect it enough to stay out of prison.

The whole story:
"Over a 30-year career in six parishes, Geoghan was accused of sexual abuse involving more than 130 children."
Makes Sandusky look like a piker by comparison.

No. He won't last long, either.
He will kill himself!
TalkingDog
(9,001 posts)He's the star of his own life. He's "charming" and "intelligent" which is how, in his mind, he seemed to keep getting away with things.
In reality he was part of a money making machine for a University. If he was exposed the money would slow down. So he was propped up. Enabled.
If he kills himself, it won't be immediately, if ever. He'll most likely be a model prisoner, if he lasts that long. Then he'll have some sort of "conversion experience" and the press will be all over him. He feeds off of attention.

(101,361 posts)When they're looks at the certainty of the rest of their life in prison, it may be the only act left to them. For instance, Harold Shipman, a British doctor who murdered perhaps 250 of his patients (since he signed the death certificates, the exact number cannot be known), hanged himself in his cell: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Shipman . Some of his victims left him money, but some he appears to have killed just because he could. There's no doubt he was egocentric.

(512 posts)The monster in human shape known as Jerry Sandusky does not deserve the release and peace of death. My wish would be for him to live 1,000,000 years in solitary confinement, no TV, no enjoyment whatsoever. Just 1,000,000 years of continuous, monotonous HELL with only his thoughts to keep him company!

Let him serve out his sentence. I hope it's 60 years for each victim he molested.

(32,090 posts)and likely inaccurate anyway. We know how these cases tend to go. He is high profile and will likely be in protective confinement somewhere.

alcibiades_mystery
(36,437 posts)By and large, these kinds of convicts go into protective custody and stay there, and very little inmate-caused harm, comes to them.
The idea that child molesters are constantly attacked in prison is just a little fantasy held by people on the outside. They are certainly targets for violence, but over the past 20 years or so, prisons have become very good at reducing violence, especially toward vulnerable populations (like this offender class).
The fantasy (that child molesters are attacked, beaten, and otherwise "paid back" through inmate violence) is now largely mythology, not borne out by any objective metrics. Despite the violent revenge fantasies of the public, most child molesters do their time in relative peace, like other offender classes, and most are released. Clearly, Sandusky will not be released, but the idea that he "won't last long" is just a silly little bit of nonsense. He'll go into a PC unit and live a relatively normal prison life once he is normalized into the routine.
sorefeet
(1,241 posts)They are kept in PC protective custody OR they would most definately be killed in a very short time if in general population. The prison life will take a toll quickly at his age. I have a friend who has been in 3 times and at 54 years old he said he would NOT go back because it is just too hard of a life mentally and physically. He would rather the alternative of a toaster in the bathtub.
alcibiades_mystery
(36,437 posts)even most sex offenders got through their sentences. The idea that "most would definitely be killed in a very short time if in general population" simply doesn't accord with any set of facts. Has the violence against this class of offenders been reduced significantly over the last two decades? Yes, of course. As has all prison violence. But most sex offenders, and even child molesters, got through their sentences, gen-pop or otherwise, even before violence reduction programs. People getting killed in prison was always much more rare than the popular mythologies imagine it to be.

Prisoners don't carry shanks around all the time because they get searched so often. The only make them for hit jobs in inter or intra gang violence.
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)First, molesters are segregated from general population since Sandusky he is even more high profile, he'll be more segre grated.
You could point to Dahmer or whoever, but I imagine the numbers of high profile cons living in prison are far greater. Gary Ridgway is still alive and that's 1.

(4,340 posts)Do you know what kind of lives they live during the season? No ordinary person can do what they do when there's football to be played. Prison will probably take no toll on him physically (or even emotionally.) But the tedium and boredom may eventually get to him. I don't know if something like that is fatal, though.
