donnie's sputtering presser made me think of the hudsucker proxy

the tim robbins character is plucked from the mailroom to be president of the company and rides a wave of success thanks to the invention of the hula hoop. at his first press conference they are clamoring to get his pic and ask questions of the new wunderkid and he unintentionally puns that he "didn't expect all this hoop-la" and is surprised to find that he hit on a winning line, getting much laughter and great p.r.

later, the company goes downhill and now the press is hounding him. he tries the line that worked for him before, "i didn't expect all this hoop-la", and the joke falls completely flat, and the p.r. is terrible.

the presser reminded me of that scene, especially when donnie started trashing hillary. that same scene. the press had turned on him (well, as much as they'll ever do to russopublicans these days) and he tried to dig himself out by going back to the applause lines that worked for him during the campaign, only to have it all fall flat now that he's seen more negatively.

only i don't think there's a waring hudsucker angel character to save him....

(Yeah I was starstruck!) I actually told him I'd watched it many times before I realized why the repeated jumps out the window messed it up for me. Had a brother that jumped, could not find it funny. He seemed genuinely sorry about that. There's more but....

That was some night!

Your reply wiped whatever response to the OP I had in my head...perhaps one day you'll write a detailed diary of this encounter!

A Woody Allen movie Something about Harry and hell or something? Meh!
But a friends gf was a publicist and got me in. Woody and Sun Yi were obviously good friends with Peter Bogdonavich and his also super young wife- the little sister of Dorothy Stratton. Was odd to see those jowly men with wives who looked like high schoolers. Sun Yi was wearing a pink sweater with that fluffy marabou trim (like a Gabor sister)

My friend was actually friends w the Cohens and their wives. She never invited me to another party and I swear it wasn't my fault!!

You painted an incredible, if not slightly creepy, picture! I could only imagine what I might say to those at such a gathering. Although I pride myself on my composure around celebrities, I'd imagine I'd totally geek out in front of either of the Coen brothers and blabber on about "The Big Lebowski" or "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"...a la Chris Farley in the old "Chris Farley Show" skit from SNL! "So...remember that part in the movie where the Dude had his head shoved in the toilet...???"

sorry about your brother. can't really relate to that. my grandfather committed suicide, but at age 80 i think, after getting a terminal lung cancer diagnosis. doesn't seem to compare to what i'm guessing was a jump at a much younger age.

3/4 attempt. I did an OP on it once and I think the thread was cathartic for a lot of people. It was before meds and he had a very tortured existence.

My brother is bipolar paranoid schizophrenic with delusions. He was highly functional as a kid but couldn't keep it together for college and his life's been a mess ever since.

Dropped off the grid, no one's heard from him in 10 years. Dad was able to find out that his social security disability checks are still getting cashed so he's probably still alive but we don't know more about than that.

A very frustrating illness for all involved.

It's exhausting, never knowing how it's going to be day to day. I have a cousin I was close to as well as other relatives. It's probably the reason I never wanted to be a mom. I hope your brother has found some peace.
