......................... Even then, though, he clearly remained the most unpopular president-elect in modern history. Again, that was the honeymoon.

And now it’s over.

A new poll from Quinnipiac University suggests that Trump has reverted to his pre-election standing, with Americans having major concerns about his temperament and the direction in which his presidency will lead the country. Trump’s continued controversies seem to have put him right back where he was before he won the election.

Quinnipiac is the first high-quality pollster to poll on Trump twice since the election. And while its poll in late November showed his favorable rating rising from 34 percent to 44 percent, that number has dropped back to 37 percent, which is about where it stood for much of the campaign. That’s tied for Trump’s worst favorable rating in a poll since his election. And a majority — 51 percent — now have an unfavorable view of him.

Likewise, the Quinnipiac poll shows a drop in confidence in Trump across the board. Although 59 percent were optimistic about the next four years under Trump in November, today that number is 52 percent. While 41 percent thought he would be a better leader than President Obama, it’s now 34 percent. While 52 percent thought he would help the nation's economy, it’s now 47 percent. While 40 percent thought his policies would help their personal financial situation, it’s now 27 percent. While 53 percent thought he’d take the country in the right direction, it’s now 45 percent.

You get the idea. There are similar drops in views of his honesty (42 percent to 39 percent), his leadership skills (56 percent to 49 percent), his compassion for average Americans (51 percent to 44 percent), his levelheadedness (38 percent to 33 percent) and his ability to unite the country (47 percent to 40 percent).

And then it gets worse. Toward the bottom,................

turnout is also disgusting.

As far as getting these people off their asses, I can't come up with anything. I WOULD like the Dems to target the Dem-leaning areas that, for example, saw HALF their polling places removed, which deprived thousands of Dems of their ability to vote. Those voters WANTED to vote and couldn't.

don't you? Here in VA they have absentee ballots. You have to present yourself at the county courthouse, prove you are you with a specified ID, tell them the reason you won't be in town to vote, and then they will issue you an absentee ballot that must reach their office before a certain day.

I can see plenty of potential for tripping people up here. Maybe the office all of a sudden doesn't have enough ballots to pass out. Lots of people have transportation problems and can't get to the office. Etc.

But you are correct in that people really need to get off their asses -- I can only hope that the horror show that is the Trump presidency will do the job. We certainly can't seem to.

hopeful, about what W had after about 6 years of disastrous terms (all but about 12% finally disowned him close to the end). And that's before Trump's even sworn in and starts failing, before he starts getting in some big battles with congress, the courts, and business, and before the pubs finally learn what the anti-government extremists around him are planning. Going to be some big shocks in pub-land.

and for this thread, which is about sagging conservative confidence in Trump SINCE the election. Not for trashing Democrats.

Others, note that perhaps a third of conservatives would support their chosen leader no matter what to the very end---as long as they saw him as a strong, winning leader. W's ultimate unprecedented loss of support wasn't because he destroyed America's status on the planet, his own status as an international war criminal, or because he betrayed and lied to them, it was because he was a loser as a leader and they hated that. And now their imaginary strong-man Trump takes his place at the head of their columns...

A party expecting to win when the other side is bompin' 'round the upper-thirties of eligible voters strikes me as fine-tuning a policy of passive aggression beyond all reason. And speculating on why over 40% of eligible voters don't vote invites a sober look into the mirror.

If there is yet another DU rule about alertable posts, please inform.

Boy, do they not know what's going on.

But I was speaking of the shocks those A-OKs and those authoritarians who imagine Strong, Reaganish Trump will take care of them (hard to imagine, isn't it!) have coming. Conservatives do not handle uncertainty and fear well, and certainly not change, of which they are going to get plenty.

Of course they will blame us, but with any luck they will turn on their leaders, Trump and the ones hiding in the shadows. Fingers crossed. God knows I was wrong when I hoped they would see Trump as the bottom of the hole and say no. Now I know they don't have one. Only a crash will stop their fall.
