Former British Spy Christopher Steele Prepared Explosive Trump Memo
by HANS NICHOLS and KEN DILANIAN
An explosive 35-page memo on Donald Trump's relationship with Russia, which contains unverified allegations and which Trump called a "complete fabrication" Wednesday, was written by a former British intelligence officer working for Orbis Business Intelligence, Ltd., two people familiar with the matter told NBC News.
Separately, Rohit Kachroo, security editor for NBC News British partner ITV News, reported that the man's name is Christopher David Steele, a former officer with MI6 who was posted to Moscow in 1990. The memo was originally generated on behalf of Republican opponents of Trump's but was later shopped to the media by Democrats.
...snip
Steele's whereabouts were not known Thursday, and intelligence analyst Glenmore Trenear-Harvey said it was "perfectly plausible" the ex-spy could be in hiding in fear of retaliation from the Russian government.
"Look what happened to Litvinenko," he said. "Putin has form... Such things have happened in the past."

(73,559 posts)I do not think that there is any chance that the next administration would appoint a better person for that position. Indeed, in the context of the position, I don't think there are any better options currently, no matter who does the appointing.

(73,559 posts)It can be difficult to engage in rational discussions on this particular topic -- not with you, of course -- on DU. But I can say that those who blame him for the Trump victory might benefit from taking an objective look at what actually happened. Funny how a few months before the election, many of his current detractors viewed him as golden.

(10,500 posts)I agree that there is a strong danger that Trump would appoint someone infinitely worse. And that could be dangerous.
But there was something horrible about this last election which goes well beyond Donald Trump. It is terrible that any Republican won the first election after the way they acted following Benghazi. The conspiracy theories and lies were loathsome and evil. And they repeatedly abused their power during the investigation into the fake email scandal. The State Department's Inspector General's office was even more egregiously partisan than the FBI.
Once again, there have been no consequences. There never are. And winning the election after filling their hearts with hatred, and chanting "lock her up," has given a sense of validation to the Republicans. They feel vindicated and on the right side of history. When that happens for them....it is extremely dangerous for us. Because they will go to great lengths to hold onto that feeling.
At some point there needs to be a consequence for their actions. At some point we need to take an action to officially establish a historical result emanating from their misconduct.

There's nothing saying that trumPee might not fire him ANYWAY after the 20th, and appoint someone even worse.
I suppose a lot depends on how much suction Comey's willing to apply to that flabby, pasty ass currently slouching towards Washington.
