January 18, 2017By Taegan Goddard
When President-elect Donald Trump offered Rick Perry the job of energy secretary five weeks ago, Mr. Perry gladly accepted, believing he was taking on a role as a global ambassador for the American oil and gas industry that he had long championed in his home state, the New York Times reports.
In the days after, Mr. Perry, the former Texas governor, discovered that he would be no such thing that in fact, if confirmed by the Senate, he would become the steward of a vast national security complex he knew almost nothing about, caring for the most fearsome weapons on the planet, the United States nuclear arsenal.

(59,587 posts)As noted elsewhere on DU today, what's worse, that he didn't know anything about DOE five years after calling for its elimination, or that his new boss couldn't be bothered to check, y'know, doe.gov and find out something - anything - about what the job entails?
The new Trump Cosmology - It's incompetent assholes all the way down.

(5,914 posts)If he were deemed Secretary of Agriculture, at least we could assume he had some passing familiarity with at least some of the subject matter. I mean, he would at least know what a cow is , what they do, and maybe where you might find them.
But this is beyond ridiculous. This is like walking onto a 727 and finding out your captain is the fabrics manager at Hobby Lobby and has never flown a plane before.
