I have an XM Radio receiver in my car, and I usually listen to the classical music station when I'm driving. So this morning I'm driving along and the announcer says they've asked listeners to go to their web site and choose music suitable to be played on Inauguration Day. And what do you suppose the most asked-for music was?
Mozart's Requiem.
Perfect. But when you think about it, it's pretty damn sad when most people think the most appropriate music for a presidential inauguration is a setting of the Mass for the Dead.
So, in keeping with the mood, here's the Lacrimosa from Mozart's brilliant Requiem:

From the 1966 film score by Maurice Jarre about the occupation & liberation of Paris. Music starts at 0:32, depicting Nazis marching into Paris in 1940 followed by Resistance themes. Somehow this seems appropriate now.

(34,111 posts)This is my favorite Requiem Mass and I have never played it. I am holding on to my position hoping we do it before I have to retire. What incredible, beautiful music. Still perfect in our grief.
