TCM airing A Face in the Crowd on Trump Inauguration Day

This Friday, viewers across the country will have the opportunity to flip on their televisions to watch a power-hungry, media-savvy celebrity rise to megalomaniacal heights. Were referring of course to Elia Kazans 1957 film A Face in the Crowd, which TCM will air in the hours after President-elect Donald Trumps inauguration.
A darkly comic cautionary tale about the dangers of fame and politics intertwining, the film stars Andy Griffith as a plainspoken drifter who becomes a populist hero via radio and TV appearances. As his ambition, ego, and disdain for his audience grow, he begins to spin out of control and is ultimately brought down by a vitriolic rant caught on a hot microphone.
Against the backdrop of Trumps unprecedented political ascent, A Face in the Crowd has frequently been compared to the trajectory of the former Apprentice star, in outlets including CNN, the Washington Post, the Ringer, Deadline Hollywood, and the AV Club.
According to a TCM spokesperson, however, the film was programmed as part of a tribute to the actress Patricia Neal, whose birthday coincides with Inauguration Day.
A Face in the Crowd will air Jan. 20 at 5:45 p.m. ET on TCM.

(111,264 posts)and it just never seems to get old, it's such a perfect character study of a narcissist who starts to believe his own bullshit. I just wish we had a Patricia Neal out there to get sick of being used and start to sabotage some of them on the air.
Republicans miss the point, of course, they see themselves as Mr Smith (who went to Washington) and outspoken people like Bernie Sanders and Liz Warren as Lonesome Rhodes. Yeah, they're weird.
Andy Griffith is downright scary as Rhodes. If you haven't seen this before, make a point of watching it. It's that good.

An emissary from the future struggles to convince the next U.S. President to jump from an airliner, before it crashes, killing him and setting off a disastrous future. The candidate is already torn in several directions, elated from a big primary win, avoiding an interview by an aggressive reporter, excited by having his mistress on-board, with his frigid wife absent. The time traveler assures the candidate he needs no parachute, because the advanced technology his presidency will make possible, allows them to scoop him out of the sky.
