A group including former White House ethics attorneys will file a lawsuit on Monday accusing President Donald Trump of allowing his businesses to accept payments from foreign governments, in violation of the U.S. Constitution.
Deepak Gupta, a Supreme Court litigator working on the case, said the lawsuit would allege that the Constitutions emoluments clause forbids payments to Trumps businesses. It will seek a court order forbidding Trump from accepting such payments, he said.
The case, reported earlier by The New York Times, is part of a wave of litigation expected to be filed against Trump by liberal advocacy groups. It will be filed in a Manhattan federal court, Gupta said, and plaintiffs will include Richard Painter, a former ethics lawyer in Republican President George W. Bushs White House.
Trumps son Eric Trump, an executive vice president of the Trump Organization, told the Times on Sunday that the company had taken more steps than required by law to avoid any possible legal exposure, such as agreeing to donate any profits collected at Trump-owned hotels that come from foreign government guests to the U.S. Treasury.
This is purely harassment for political gain, Trump told the newspaper.

(17,201 posts)So sayeth Beavis. Butthead has yet to make his opinion known, having been dispatched to Moscow for some BIG negotiations. I mean, these are BIG. They're so big you won't BELIEVE how big they are, trust me.
Even Beavis knows that daddy dearest can rig it so there AREN'T any profits. And to make it sweeter, he'll probably bill the government for any shortfall. Heh heh heh.

(22,651 posts)is it the other one who bragged about all the "Russian money" ? I get the two old sons 'stories" mixed up.
all the trumps need some background checks and basic security clearances. Not sure why Republicans refuse to allow any vetting & protect their trump clan.

(5,272 posts)There is a "Trump Organization" but my understanding is that the hundreds of Trump projects are all filed as separate Donald Trump personally owned businesses, mostly registered in Delaware for secrecy and have not been divested because he owes money and in many cases would be in default if those companies were divested.
