http://www.rawstory.com/2017/01/trump-fans-are-furious-after-jake-tapper-posted-a-bible-verse-about-lying-being-a-sin/Thursday morning, CNNs Jake Tapper took it into his head to tweet a Bible verse about the sin of falsehood.
Tapper quoted the Book of Proverbs, Chapter 12 verse 22: Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.
(end snip)
or the ever popular commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness.
Heads are 'splodin.

(82,849 posts)I didn't think he had it in him. But the verse from Proverbs hits Trump's ersatz Christian supporters on several levels (even though from what I can tell, Tapper didn't even refer to Lord Littlehands). First, of course, is having the Bible quoted back to them, because they think they own and control the Bible in its entirety, and they are the sole interpreters. Second, the verse is pretty straightforward. There's not a lot of wiggle room or context that can be brought to bear to avoid its plain meaning. Third, the use of the word translated "abomination," which these people would like to use exclusively for knuckling the homosexuals.
Well played, Jake.

(82,849 posts)"Really? Can you show me where in the Bible it says that? Because my understanding is that the Bible (and Jesus) are pretty consistently against lying; to let your yes be yes and your no be no."
The "let your yes be yes" is from Matthew 5:37, the Sermon on the Mount, and is the basis for some Christians to decline to be sworn when giving testimony.

(14,327 posts)(i.e., Mosaic law as distinct from Christian teachings) in reference to things like washing hands before eating or laboring on the Sabbath. But by definition a Christian is obligated to follow the teachings of Jesus and correct him/herself when they deviate. To say that Jesus' teachings do not apply to them means they cannot call themselves Christian. It's worth pointing that out, although you can expect protestation.

(82,849 posts)You don't have to be confrontational, just evince a genuine interest. Literalists are usually very wrapped up in having a strong, unequivocal biblical basis for anything they have to say. Sometimes you can chip away at the edifice by introducing a little doubt or equivocation to them. For example, if they use the story of Joshua's spies as justification for lying, you can say, "Well, since we're not casing the Promised Land for invasion and settlement, I don't think that provides blanket justification for lying."
MANative
(4,112 posts)and why we don't "connect" about this topic, is that she knows I'm an atheist and uses that as a club to invalidate everything I say about anything connected to religion. It's really hard for me to make the arguments credibly (in her eyes) when I look at the bible as a collection of allegories and parables, while she looks at it as literal, exact history.
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)You're giving up the home field advantage by asking her to cite chapter and verse (in this case, literally) where she bases her belief. For me, it would be enough to introduce some doubt in her confident worldview, a little shade of gray in what is for her supposed to be very black and white.

(10,252 posts)were inspired by Mahayana Buddhism, which started to flourish around the 1st Century BCE thru the 1st Century CE. Alexander the Great placed Greek philosophers in the court of King Menander, who established a Greco-Buddhist Culture. Some think that Greco-Buddhist thought influenced the Greek stoics. All of this history and Greek philosophy would have been known to the Roman elite in Palestine. And certainly Greco-Buddhist thought and practice would have travelled throughout the silk road routes in the Levant. Buddhism is not so much a religion, as it is a practice. Mahayana Buddhism is distinct from the earlier Hinayana Buddhism, which emphasized moralty and ethics. While Mahayana Buddhism emphasized compassion and wisdom. I won't go into the wisdom bit, except to say that it is seeing reality as it truly exists, and not as the delusions that we hold so dearly.
I'm not a Christian, but I know more about the real teachings of Jesus than many of these self-righteous fundamentalist yo-yos. It's really simple. Feed the poor, heal the sick, practice peace and love thy neighbor. Or to make it even more simple, practice the Goldden Rule. One doesn't need to believe in a God to practice the Golden Rule.
We as a country have lost our moral compass. It is my hope that this Trumpian episode will enable Americans to recognize that we are all of us connected, and that practicing the Golden Rule is ultimately in our own self interest.

(99 posts)...and Trumpers go crazy. Not only did Tapper not mention anyone's name, he also didn't even refer to anybody, yet the Trumpers try to call him out on it. Know why? Because it goes without saying that today if anyone is talking about lying, they're talking about this new administration. Evangelicals have embraced Trump, the biggest fraud, liar, godless, cruel, vindictive, egotistical, sorry-ass man to ever grace the White House. How can you preach to people to try to live a Christ-like life and then support someone who is the exact opposite of Christ? I can't wrap my head around it.

Heres a Bible verse for them and their false christian hero BLOTUS Trump:
John 8:44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Speaking of journalist shouldn't quote scripture...they shouldn't if it is somehow tied n with their job. However, Jake Tapper is also a private citizen. He didn't use CNN as a bandwagon but his personal twitter account.

It actually goes like this, in full;
Proverbs 6:16-19King James Version (KJV)
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
It was meant to be shown to hypocrites.
