This whole Wall thing has to be the most goddamn idiotic thing I've ever heard in my life.

Seriously, Trump's supporters get so legitimately excited about it, as if it's going to be a great panacea to solve all the country's ills. Heart of hearts, they actually think it will work. Yesterday on Facebook they were ecstatic about it. I even saw someone saying they should put landmines on the southern border of it.

It's a wall, people. A glorified fence. For everyone who thinks this will stop the flow of illegal drugs into the US, do yourself a favor. Go to Netflix and watch Narcos. Watch the documentary Cocaine Cowboys. And then ask yourself how in the hell is a shitty wall going to make a difference with that?

This is lunacy. And telling people that it's lunacy only makes them more enthusiastic about it.

The whole deal is nothing more than the Simpsons Monorail episode. And we're all Marge.

3. The border fence, yes they tried to secure the border before, was a mess
I know a guy who worked for environmental compliance on the fence and the biggest challenge is that the border goes through wild, beautiful, fields, mountains, bodies of water, ditches, protected parks and nature refuges. You can't just slap down a traditional wall.

He's just selling lies to idiots. A wall cannot straddle the border.

seriously, how many people actually enter the country by crossing the rio grande and then make their way to ohio or michigan?

i'm sure it happens occasionally, but really, how many -- compared to how many people simply overstay their visas?

I know it happens, but most simply overstay a work or tourist visa; others come by way of Canada; others by air or sea, whether hidden or with fake papers, etc.

And of course, the wall won't change anything for smuggling people in.

In fact, just about the only thing it affects is people just walking across.

http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2015/sep/08/jorge-ramos/ramos-40-undocumented-immigrants-come-air/

"Depending on which poll you believe, between 40 and 50 percent of Americans support building a wall or fence along the border with Mexico. Jorge Ramos, a news anchor on Univision and Fusion, makes no secret of his disdain for the idea.

A few days after attracting widespread notice after being thrown out of a Donald Trump press conference while asking a question on immigration policy (he was later allowed back in), Ramos accepted an invitation to appear on Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor on Sept. 2, 2015. Host Bill O’Reilly’s first question pressed him on the issue of a border wall.

O’Reilly: "You don’t want a border wall. You don’t want that. Why not?"

Ramos: "It’s a completely absurd idea. Why would you want to build a 1,900-mile wall between Mexico and the United States if almost 40 percent of all immigrants come by plane and they overstay their visas?"

Ramos is far from the first person to deploy the statistic that 40 percent of unauthorized immigrants come into the country under a legal visa and then stay beyond its expiration date. Two Republican presidential candidates, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, have said the same thing. When we checked Rubio’s claim, we rated it Mostly True."

And I completely agree that the wall will change nothing. It's stupid. Personally, I'm for open borders. From the families I've talked to, anyone that wants to be here is here.

I suspect just the surveying, legal maneuvers and bidding process might well take 10 years or more to even get the project under way. Any guesses on how long the actual construction phase will take? tRump will be molding in his grave by the time this thing is finished.

As long as employers can hire the undocumented workers with NO PENALTY, they will hire them. The people come here for WORK that is better than what they can get in their native countries. It doesn't take a genius to figure out if the jobs are here, the employers hire with no fear of being fined, then the people needing those jobs will come to do them. Their focus needs to be on more than just the workers.

Mexicans took their jobs. Mexicans have health care they don't have. It's all lies. The bottom line-make someone else suffer because nothing is going to make your life better. It's really about being mean and evil. And dumb. The jobs are not coming back. The jobs aren't there. Automation took them. Real jobs require real education.

Everyone is now free to pick their own produce and mow their own lawns and work construction. I guess those are the jobs Trumpers want. Because those are immigrant jobs-let's see the Trumpers live off of those with Trumpcare that covers nothing.

When all of the illegals are out and the wall is up are all of the beer guzzling Trump supporters going to do the jobs now available? Did any of those supporters ever go and apply for those jobs? Could those supporters handle those type of jobs? Just asking.

30. The Great Molly Ivins Talks About the Wall
Thu Jan 26, 2017, 06:14 PM
Jan 2017

n 1983, I was a judge at the Terlingua Chili Cookoff, and my memory of the events may not be perfect -- for example, for years I've been claiming Jimmy Carter was president at the time, but that's the kind of detail one often loses track of in Terlingua.

Anyway, it was '83 or some year right around there when we held The Fence climbing contest. See, people talked about building The Fence back then, too. The Fence along the Mexican border. To keep Them out.

At the time, the proposal was quite specific -- a 17-foot cyclone fence with bob wire at the top. So a test fence was built at Terlingua, and the First-Ever Terlingua Memorial Over, Under or Through Mexican Fence Climbing Contest took place. Prize: a case of Lone Star beer. Winning time: 30 seconds.

I tell this story to make the one single point about the border and immigration we know to be true: The Fence will not work. No fence will work. The Great darn Wall of China will not work. Do not build a fence. It will not work. They will come anyway. Over, under or through.
