I do it all the time.
Anyone else ever done this?

(11,304 posts)help themselves. Many working poor work hard but can't afford to buy things for their families. I think it is imperative we all help those who try hard to help themselves. Because by the grace of god go I.

(15,438 posts)I think most people do - at least Democrats.
I always hope that others will support my issue too - public health with regards to chemicals. So far, not so much.

(53,339 posts)I support things in which I believe, whether or not they affect me personally. Like school bonds. I don't have, nor do I expect to have in the future, children in our public schools. But I support public schools, and I do not begrudge the fact that, as a taxpayer, I'm taxed to pay for them. I vote in favor of higher taxes for schools and other programs from which I get no personal benefit. What's important is that our society benefits--so I guess that in a way, I do benefit indirectly.

(12,151 posts)Assume you're focusing on the word "directly," but we all benefit pretty directly from the common good. I don't work for minimum wage, but my city is better if entry-level workers make a living wage. Not in any recognized minority, but I benefit when more people have access to opportunity and fair treatment. Not a woman, but I need the women of the world to be respected and encouraged. Etc.
I'd guess most people posting here are more or less on that page.
I don't know how the idea that the entire world is a zero-sum proposition where everyone's well being is a plate of cookies and more (or even 'some') for someone is supposedly less for everyone else, took such a firm hold, but it's a damned destructive, stupid idea.

Exactly the way as I would feel in that same situation.
That is what I always liked about you all these years. You have a sense of decency. We need more of that.

(15,682 posts)What happens if I one day fall into a position that requires the same help? Or have friends and family members whose lives will be improved? I can usually imagine myself in another person's shoes even when it doesn't much apply to me. Well, except the shoes of the 1%. I have trouble believing that could ever happen to me.

(18,219 posts)In fact, more often than not.
I am not gay, but I support them. I am not black, but I support equal rights. I am not poor, but I fight for all the people who are having trouble day to day. I have never used government help of any kind yet, but I want it to be available to ones who need it.
I live knowing every day that I could be in a different situation tomorrow.

(1,239 posts)I think that all law affect the distribution of wealth and what I want is laws that benefit society as a whole and not special interests including myself. I will vote and support any law that benefits society as a whole. I care deeply about a society that is fair and just and supports human life before capital. I do not take a narrow view with only my interest at heart. People first and I am happy to pay taxes that make the playing field more fair and the distribution of wealth more even.

(10,558 posts)If you have The Dollar Store or It's equivalent in your area, go there and purchase a dozen or so umbrellas. Store them in your car. The next time you are out driving in the rain, seek out those who may be out walking without an umbrella. Well I am sure you can figure out what to do next.
Or I suppose you could have spent that money on your favorite fast food, maybe a bottle of wine or a six pack....whatever makes ya happy I guess....me, I am into umbrellas.

It is diametrically opposed to the "teachings" of Hannity, O' Rielly, and Limbaugh. To them , the best policy is that which rewards greed.
Who was the sucker that believes "good" is destined to prevail? I need it explained to me again cause it ain't working.

(1,453 posts)If you want to shut down a T-bagging idiot who goes on and on
about *handouts,* look them directly in the eye, give them an
exasperated sigh, and then explain: "IT'S NOT FOR ME!! (SNAP, SSDI,
whatever....). I don't need it! It's for my NEIGHBOR! It's for someone's
CHILD..." etc., etc.
This has truly worked for me. I think it works because when a person
really believes this concept (as does everyone with half a heart), the
righteous passion of it stops them dead in their tracks.

(5,198 posts)because at an early age I got that what goes around comes around, and you never know when or if you might need help. This is a social value that to me is the center of a compassionate and sane world. Everyone should have the same access to the laws of the land, and rights to a peaceful life. It is so simple I feel like doing this
