I support things in which I believe, whether or not they affect me personally. Like school bonds. I don't have, nor do I expect to have in the future, children in our public schools. But I support public schools, and I do not begrudge the fact that, as a taxpayer, I'm taxed to pay for them. I vote in favor of higher taxes for schools and other programs from which I get no personal benefit. What's important is that our society benefits--so I guess that in a way, I do benefit indirectly.

Assume you're focusing on the word "directly," but we all benefit pretty directly from the common good. I don't work for minimum wage, but my city is better if entry-level workers make a living wage. Not in any recognized minority, but I benefit when more people have access to opportunity and fair treatment. Not a woman, but I need the women of the world to be respected and encouraged. Etc.

I'd guess most people posting here are more or less on that page.

I don't know how the idea that the entire world is a zero-sum proposition where everyone's well being is a plate of cookies and more (or even 'some') for someone is supposedly less for everyone else, took such a firm hold, but it's a damned destructive, stupid idea.

I think that all law affect the distribution of wealth and what I want is laws that benefit society as a whole and not special interests including myself. I will vote and support any law that benefits society as a whole. I care deeply about a society that is fair and just and supports human life before capital. I do not take a narrow view with only my interest at heart. People first and I am happy to pay taxes that make the playing field more fair and the distribution of wealth more even.

If you have The Dollar Store or It's equivalent in your area, go there and purchase a dozen or so umbrellas. Store them in your car. The next time you are out driving in the rain, seek out those who may be out walking without an umbrella. Well I am sure you can figure out what to do next.

Or I suppose you could have spent that money on your favorite fast food, maybe a bottle of wine or a six pack....whatever makes ya happy I guess....me, I am into umbrellas.

exasperated sigh, and then explain: "IT'S NOT FOR ME!! (SNAP, SSDI,
whatever....). I don't need it! It's for my NEIGHBOR! It's for someone's

This has truly worked for me. I think it works because when a person

righteous passion of it stops them dead in their tracks.
