Most people just AREN'T familiar with the basics of "how to not get crazy sick in third world / survival conditions." Remember for most people this affects, their day to day is going to work, getting clean food from a store, and eating it on the couch in front of the TV. Americans are, by and large, helpless when stuff like this goes down. I'm not going to begrudge them needing even "duh!" advice.
