By Mitch McConnell February 1 at 1:04 PM
Mitch McConnell, a Republican, represents Kentucky in the Senate and is majority leader.
The president made an outstanding choice with his nomination Tuesday of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Justice Antonin Scalias passing was a significant loss for the court and for our country. Gorsuchs impressive background and long record of service, however, give me confidence he will carry forward Scalias legacy of faithfully applying the law and the Constitution.
Like Scalia, Gorsuch understands the constitutional limits on his authority, and he knows that the duty of a judge is to apply the law evenhandedly rather than ruling with bias toward one party or another. When the Senate confirmed Gorsuch to his current judgeship, the bipartisan support was so overwhelming that he was approved without a single vote in opposition. I hope he can expect fair consideration again now.
Recent actions by Senate Democrats, however, do not inspire confidence.
Hear that sound?
Its the far left hitting rewind on the Supreme Court attack eight-track theyve been playing for more than 40 years. When Gerald Ford nominated John Paul Stevens, they attacked Stevens as anti-woman. When Ronald Reagan chose Anthony M. Kennedy, they said Kennedy was unqualified. When George H.W. Bush put forward David Souter, they declared Souter a threat to minorities. The attacks seem ridiculous today, but theyre an important reminder that no matter who a Republican president nominates, the far left will say the same things. If you think youve heard moldy oldies like Extreme!, Scare Quotes! and Anti-[Fill in the blank]! before well, you have, and youre about to hear a lot more of the lefts apocalyptic rhetoric, on repeat and remastered in full digital surround.

(14,924 posts)when he stole Obama's rightful SCOTUS pick. Many of us, and quite possibly most Americans, will consider anyone besides Merrick Garland a usurper. It will undermine and delegitimize every single swing vote the usurper casts in any 5-4 decision, for his entire tenure on the court. I would never hold any such vote, cast from his filthy stolen seat, to represent "justice." And I will always blame McConnell

(24,446 posts)He invented a new "precedent" that was certainly not agreed to by President Obama or the Democrats in the Senate and he and the party rode it all the way through the rest of President Obama's term and then publicly threatened to refuse to confirm any of Hillary's nominees for 4 years if she had been elected POTUS. I don't like the idea of hobbling the Supreme Court like this but I refuse to accept the ability of President Trump to nominate anybody but Garland to the seat as President Obama had intended. And it's not even like the Republicans held a hearing and then refused their consent. They didn't even hold a hearing or confirmation vote and vote him down. They just held the seat hostage until they got Trump in and now they're trying to complete the theft. If he has to fill another seat if another one dies or steps aside, fine. That's his prerogative to fill. But not this one IMHO.

(54,448 posts)Gorsuch, and any other Trump nominee, for that matter, deserves as much "fair consideration" from Senate Democrats as Merrick Garland got from Senate Republicans. No more, no less.
McTurtle and Grassley chose the tune here. It's time they danced to it.
