Big jump seen in Oregon parents delaying vaccines

From MSNBC: http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/18/12243047-big-jump-seen-in-oregon-parents-delaying-vaccines

An increasing number of parents may be choosing to delay or limit certain vaccinations for their young children, a new study shows, even as cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, continue to rise nationwide, with recent outbreaks in California and Washington.

The study, which examined medical records for 97,711 Portland children, found an almost four-fold increase between 2006 and 2009 in the percentage of parents who delayed or skipped vaccinations, researchers reported in the journal Pediatrics. Experts say that by delaying certain vaccinations, parents may be putting their children -- and those of others -- at a far greater risk of contracting deadly diseases, such as pneumonia and pertussis.

The new study examined the vaccination histories of children born in the Portland area between 2003 and 2009. Between 2006 and 2009, the number of parents who rejected government recommendations and made up their own vaccine schedules rose from 2.5 percent to 9.5 percent.

...

Deville is especially concerned about parents who are choosing to delay the pneumococcal vaccine until age 2. Infants are most vulnerable to pneumonia during the first year of life. "Parents who delay the vaccine until age 2 are leaving their children vulnerable during the period where it occurs at its highest frequency,” Deville said.

The whole article is essentially a run-down on how much damage non-vaccination is doing. So thank you, anti-vaccination and "safe" vaccination nutters. Thank you so fucking much.

Or children dying of things like whooping cough and diphtheria, like so many children used to.

Even then, some will deny the reality.

.. until one of them got the swine flu. Wow, you never saw anyone get vaccines so fast after that. She also decided to enroll them in public schools, as she thought it was healthier for them to be unvaccinated and out of school, than to get the shots and be around other kids. Once she realized why the vaccines are good, she did the right thing. My daughter refused to go to her house while she was pregnant, before the kids got their shots. And that woman works as a caterer, with her children helping out preparing the food. Glad she got a clue.

which is unfortunate. I have no problem with them suffering for their own stupidity. But ultimately it will be their children who are hurt.

as it would cause costs to rise. This increase would then be blamed on Obamcare. Sure, children would die, but they are only of value until they are born. Besides, if they die from some disease they probably would not have grown up to be good soldiers anyway.

.. and that a doctor who lost his license and was nearly jailed for faking his landmark study, is also a great person to get medical advice from.

My daughter lives in Eugene, the capital of the Oregon anti-vac crowd. And she has a newborn.. She and her husband are vaccinated, and they plan to get the baby all of her shots when the time comes.. She just prays that no moronic Jenny McCarthy devotee infects their baby before that time.

My fave are the parents that refuse vacs but smoke around their kids. Brilliant.

Parents aren't bright enough to give their kids the proper vaccines, something bad happens to the kids, they don't get to contribute to the gene pool, so on and so forth

Such a quick strong reaction.

I wonder if any of the people read the court ruling, read about what happened to the child?

I imagine that Big Pharma would lose quite a bit of money if they were to be sued for these cases in the US. It already looks like they are in for heavy losses in Italy after this ruling.

You must be one of those who insist that the FRAUDULENT LIAR Andrew Wakefield is a persecuted hero.

I trust SCIENCE over personal anecdotes that are tainted by cognitive biases and by our brain's tendency for our memories to be contaminated by later knowledge. I put those parents who claim that vaccines made their kid autistic in the same category as the people whose false memories caused the "Satanic Child Abuse" crap back in the 80s.

I had two fucking cases of whooping cough come through my classes last year, only found out when the principal handed me the stack of memos to go out to parents, warning them. It's 2012 people.
