The Germans don't want to give trump bragging rights if they find her losing the election. Merkle needs to go anti trump to save her election.

The two top candidates are a centrist woman and a male "outsider" social-democrat.

And contrary to the US, Germany has several parties and several government-coalitions are possible. Normally the moderate parties form alliances to keep the more extreme parties out:
* The far-right does not have any chance to enter any government above district-level because they don't have the necessary votes and because nobody wants to form a coalition-government with them.
* Likewise it's very, very hard for the far-left to enter e.g. a state-government because the number of possible allies is very limited for them and their only natural ally, the social-democratic party, hates their guts. (Long story, lots of bad blood between the center-left social-democrats and the far-left socialists in Germany.)
