Do you think public television should give free airtime to anti-gay Religious Right propaganda?

From Faithful America:

Neither did two senior employees of Alabama Public Television who objected to airing a TV series produced by right-wing pseudo-historian David Barton -- a Religious Right activist who supports imprisoning gay people.1 But when they spoke up, they were fired by the Republican-controlled Alabama Educational Television Commission.2

Public television is beloved for featuring entertaining, educational content, not hatred and lies. The Republicans on the AETC who are purging dissenting employees think they have the support of the religious community. They need to hear that people of faith reject their partisan agenda.

Tell the Alabama Educational Television Commission: Reinstate the fired staff and keep hateful Religious Right propaganda off public television.

A fringe figure just a few years ago, David Barton has quickly skyrocketed to the center of the conservative movement. He's busy re-writing Texas textbooks to remove references to Martin Luther King, Jr.3, advising politicians like Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann, and regularly appearing on shows like Glenn Beck's to argue that all our laws should be based on his right-wing interpretation of the Bible.

Now he's trying to push his views into the mainstream, disguising his hateful misinformation as non-political educational content. We can't let David Barton abuse religion to rewrite history on public television. Let's send a message that people of faith stand for truth, not hateful lies.

Wow, you believe that we should rewrite history with a right wing slant? sinkingfeeling Jun 2012 #10
Um, no. I don't think I even implied that. I just think being honest with kids is appropriate. HopeHoops Jun 2012 #11
The question is in the OP and your response was, "Yes, I do think it is appropriate." sinkingfeeling Jun 2012 #12
Yeah, I saw that. But PBS and NPR aren't supposed to be left-wing equivalents to FOX. HopeHoops Jun 2012 #13
I agree with 'fair and balanced' but one cannot condone lies in an attempt sinkingfeeling Jun 2012 #14
Agreed, but not having heard the broadcast I can't assess it. HopeHoops Jun 2012 #15

A person with the username "No_BS_in_2012" who has been spouting right-wing talking points constantly (see his reply about the crazy sheriff from Arizona not doing anything illegal).

If I recall from the bumper stickers on the backs of the 4x4 trucks that the rednecks in my community drive, No BS in 2012 is a Repug marketing strategy. The ones I've seen have BS in the Obama logo.

Anywho, back on point... PBS is a very successful education station. I, as I am sure many others here, grew up watching Sesame Street, Barney and Friends, that Thomas the Tank Engine show with George Carlin as Mr. Conductor (still makes me laugh that he, of all people, was put on a children's television show). These shows gave me an edge when starting school as I already knew basic reading, the alphabet, numbers, and basic addition/subtraction as well as certain social skills. Anyone who says "Defund PBS!" is a sad, self-destructive, and anti-education lunatic.

Welcome to DU, enjoy your very short stay here. You Reich-wing plants always give me the giggles.

Yes, I do think it is appropriate. Sesame Street handled the death of Mr. Hooper in the best way possible - being honest.

I wish the media was all neutral, but "fair and balanced" doesn't exist now, if it ever did.

I just think the media should be bound by the now defunct "fairness doctrine". FOX avoids it by calling their propaganda wing "commentators" or "entertainment", but the so-called "news" is just as bad.
