(06/26/12) EAST RUTHERFORD (AP) - New Jersey's two NFL teams are suing to block a project that developers say would be the largest mall in the United States.
Officials from the Giants and the Jets say the proposed "American Dream" megamall at the Meadowlands violates a prior agreement that the teams had to approve any expansion plans at the East Rutherford site, which is near MetLife stadium where the teams play.
Lawyers representing the teams and the company that built the stadium also claim the project will create "a transportation nightmare" that will adversely affect football fans.
The suit was filed Friday in Superior Court in Bergen County.
An email message left Tuesday for the developers of the American Dream project was not immediately returned.

NJ Legislature approves Meadowlands mall funding
The New Jersey Legislature cleared the way Wednesday for up to $200 million in state dollars to flow into a multibillion-dollar shopping and entertainment complex in the Meadowlands that has vexed politicians, business leaders and residents for years.
Gov. Chris Christie unveiled a deal in May for a new developer to make over what's now known as the , a project previously called Xanadu and what was even labeled the ugliest building in New Jersey. But the financial incentives Christie planned to offer the project were not eligible to be used for that purpose.
The state Senate voted 36-0 and the Assembly voted 71-6 Wednesday to fix that by making the Meadowlands area eligible under the Economic Redevelopment and Growth Grant program.
"What we're trying to do is provide incentives for places like the American Dream at the Meadowlands to be built, and in these difficult economic times, the state is going to become a partner, a small partner in the project, but a partner nonetheless," Christie said Friday on radio station WNYC. "We're going to get our money back once the project is successful."

(5,957 posts)What there now looks like crap and there would likely be a lot of jobs created, as well as substantial tax revenue. What's wrong with that?
I have Jets tickets and I'd be impacted, but I'd still like to see the site developed.

(39,191 posts)NJ doesn't need another shopping mall, and the jobs NJ needs aren't minimum wage Mall jobs.
So much for that angle...

(5,957 posts)It's an eyesore the way it looks now and any change would likely be an improvement. It's an easy trip by bus from the Port Authority and would potentially attract shoppers from NYC - not something you can say about the majority of NJ malls. There would be construction jobs initially. Retail and restaurant jobs are what they are, but for many people, they'd be better than a UI check.
What problem do you have with it?
ETA: There would also be rail access from Secaucus Junction something that no other NJ mall has, AFAIK.

(39,191 posts)Settling for minimum wage sales jobs and spreading the shopping dollars thinner than they are now is no solution.
Tear it down, then it wouldn't be an eyesore on your way to work. Christie KILLED the tunnel project and you like this?
And let it fail if only to fail Christie. If you tell me you support that piece of shit, then I'll understand.

(29,322 posts)Building stadiums attracts far fewer middle to lower class jobs where the middle and lower classes are the more likely group to spend their paycheck in the city thus creating a multiplier effect that is good for the local economy.

(25,406 posts)Because while many jobs would be created, you think they would all be "minimum wage sales jobs"?
You don't think this project would require construction workers, electricians, plumbers, etc.?
