And he'll eff that up by popping off on Twitter

(27,815 posts)... that when he ceases being a useful idiot and starts damaging the GOP "brand", they will threaten him with impeachment (and all the public humiliation attached thereto) if he doesn't voluntarily resign.
If he goes ballistic over it and resorts to his usual twitter tirades, he will literally be making their case for them by again demonstrating his mental instability.
I don't think L'il Hands realizes just how expendable he is to the Republican party, and how vicious they'll be when it's time to get rid of him.

(543 posts)A letter to my senator:
In 1974 Republican senators came together and put country ahead of party. It's once again time to act with courage for the good of the country. I urge you to follow in their wake and [vote against DeVoss, show no support for the Muslim ban, et al).

(54,020 posts)The party that was too liberal to nominate Reagan in 1976 is too fascist, doctrinaire, heartless, and ideologically greedy to nominate someone with Reagan's stances on the same issues today.
Anyway, the Senate never voted to convict and remove Nixon. In the House the call for impeachment never reached the floor. After hearing all the evidence of Nixon's obstruction, a majority of Republicans on the impeachment committee still voted Nay on all charges.
At the time of his resignation, there were still only 60 certain votes for removal in the Senate (which had a 57-43 Dem majority). Nixon had a 50-50 chance of beating the charges. He only quit cause there was more stuff coming down the pike at him, which Congress didn't know about yet--plus Haig was pushing him along toward not fighting it out. There are no Alexander Haigs in the Trump White House
Point being, today's party is far less principled and far more sheeplike than their grandfathers of '74 were.

(543 posts)My point was that in 1974 Republican senators came together and told Nixon impeachment was going to happen unless he resigned. They had the courage to put country ahead of party. Where is that courage today???
I'm well aware that the country has moved far right. The Republicans remind me of the John Birchers of 1974, and the Democrats of the moderate Republicans.

Not sure they can do much to reel him in until that base turns on him.

(27,815 posts)But his approval numbers keep going down, and he's only a few weeks in.
I imagine the PTB in the Republican party are watching those numbers like hawks. As soon as it becomes apparent that his "base" has eroded to a certain point, they'll jump on him. The 2018 midterms will soon be upon us, and they'll need lead-time to get Pence installed in the WH and his administration up-and-running before people go to the polls.

(54,020 posts)If he makes it to Jan. they will not impeach in an election year. They learned that from the Lewinsky fiasco. Horrid as it is, I think Trump is in for the full 4 years.
